Role purpose:


Responsible for managing legal, regulatory and compliance affairs in a manner which fully protects Vodacom Business Africa's (VBA) interests and manages all associated risks.

This includes negotiating and drafting legal agreements in support of VBA's commercial activities, managing legal and regulatory compliance and governance across the VBA footprint (partner and opco's).

In the event of litigation, ensuring that such is managed efficiently, effectively and in a manner that protects value and the reputation of the company.

The role requires an experienced lawyer with in-depth knowledge of legal contracting, legal writing, litigation, and associated risk management elements in a commercial environment.


Your responsibilities will include:


Day to day responsibility for providing accurate, effective and timely legal counsel, advice, analysis and support at an expert level on complex commercial and contractual matters of significant strategic and/or financial value to VBA.

Instruct and manage external attorneys (where necessary) and act on behalf of the company where appropriate, competent and legally permissible.

Provide guidance to and manage the VBA legal team and determine matters which warrant the attention and involvement of the Group Chief Legal Officer.

Play a lead role in drafting, reviewing and negotiating related legal agreements - attend to all related contract legal issues.

Ensure at all legal matters are reported and managed in accordance with the company's governance requirements and processes, delegation of authority, and Group Code of Conduct
Provide training to the business on legal, compliance and regulatory issues where applicable
Actively participate in the broader Vodafone and Vodacom legal community to bring benefit from experience, expertise and synergies to VBA


Must have technical / professional qualifications and experience:
LLB Degree and admitted attorney with a minimum of years post qualification experience.
Good knowledge of legislation applicable the telecommunication sector.
Experience in dealing with authorities.
Extensive commercial law, drafting and negotiation experience, with ability to provide innovative legal solutions in a fast-paced industry.


Core competencies, knowledge and experience:

Experienced commercial attorney with knowledge of telecoms industry or related experience.
Capable of negotiating complex transactions and providing legal advice of these transactions to senior business stakeholders.
Highly developed drafting skills covering a wide range of contracts.
Highly developed decision making and interpersonal skills.
Team player with strong negotiating/persuasive skills
Analytical skills and attention to detail
Collaboration and interpersonal skills
Customer focused. Ability to understand trade-offs/balance between business risk and legal compliance
Experience in regulations and operating across African continent beneficial.
External perspective, i.e. anticipate market changes and recommend viable solutions
Strategic thinking, with a working knowledge of various disciplines of the law.
Commercial acumen
Proactive stakeholder engagement
