About Khanyi Magubane:

Khanyi Magubane is a Film and TV producer, Writer, Radio broadcaster, Entrepreneur and Communications Specialist with 23 years working experience. A trained journalist, Khanyi has cut her teeth across all formats of media including Radio/TV/Film and digital media. Armed with a BA (Communications) and BA (Hons) Journalism both from RAU/University of Johannesburg, she began her career as a journalist at Talk Radio 702 in January 2000 and over the course of 23 years has risen through the ranks of the media, production, and broadcasting industry. She has a broad working skills set as a writer including story lining, documentary script writing, screen writing, speech writing, advert copy writing, opinion piece and editorial writing, feature writing and creative prose writing. Her broader media related skills include radio broadcasting, news reading, TV, Film production, public relations, content development and media/communication strategy writing. Khanyi is an asset for any organisation as she is hard working, disciplined, ethical, innovative and solution driven. She has strong leadership qualities and is an experienced team leader that has successfully led various teams over the course of her career.

Experience

Work Experience – TV and Film Production 

May 2022 – January 2023 Storyliner / Story consultant – The Wife Season 3 – Stained Glass

 My role as a storyliner on The Wife was to work with the head writer and other storyliners to craft the A, B and C storylines of the season. My work entailed sitting in weekly writing rooms where we developed the characters, story arches, cliff hangers and overall flow of the season. I produced episodic treatments as a storyliner, which would then be sent to sent to scriptwriters for dialogue. 

Season highlight; writing the season finale of The Wife S3. 

Current: Executive Producer: Jabba X – The Life and Times of Jabulani Tsambo (HHP) (80”)

 Zinokwanda Media and Communications is currently in the process of producing the biopic on the life of Jabulani Tsambo, better known by his stage name HHP. The documentary feature film is currently in the development phase and has so far been supported by Gauteng Film Commission and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF). 

April 2023 - Current: Executive Producer: A Woman of Substance (24”) 

Zinokwanda Media and communications is post production of their new film ‘A Woman of Substance’ a 24 minute documentary film part of a 10 – Film slate by the NFVF and Department of Sports, Arts and Culture entitled, ‘Unsung Hereos’. 

Executive Producer: Mnet Mzansi Magic Bioskop Films: ZMC produced 3 films – Kwanele, Amukelani and Thembeka Wami for Mnet’s Mzansi Magic offering. 

All three films were broadcast between 2-16 – 2019. Executive Producer duties: • liaising with Channel • Managing production team • Ensuring a smooth process from script development, preproduction, production and post-production • Reporting to Commissioning Editor and submitting schedules • Managing production budget 

March 2015 – February 2016 Executive Producer: Visionaries Lounge •

Head of production for 26 x 48’ prime time Talk Show on SABC 2. 

• The show aired from October 2015 – April 2016 • The show profiled South Africans with noteworthy experiences deemed to be visionaries in their own right. The guests interviewed represented different sectors. • EP duties included overseeing all aspects of production from preproduction, production and post-production. • Managing a team comprising of producer, researchers, archive researcher, production assistance, editors, and director. • Reporting to the Commissioning Editor and Liaising with channel on publicity and marketing aspects of the talk show. 

January – November 2014 Producer – Making Cents 4 x 48’ documentary series SABC – Reversioning and Repurposing (R&R) SABC CONTENT HUB 

• Broadcast channel: SABC 2 • Making Cents was a four-part documentary series that unpacked the economic inequalities in South Africa and the contributing factors.

 • Producer duties included managing production • Overseeing production meetings • Drawing up and managing schedules • Managing the budget • Script editing • On location shoot managing • Managing post-production • Ensuring timeous delivery 

January - October 2013 Director – Sheroes In Media: Dzuguda Productions – 2 x 48’ Documentary episodes Content Producer – Our Moments: Dzuguda Productions

 • I directed two episodes of the four-part documentary series “Sheroes in Media” which profiled four women who have contributed extensively in media. I directed the biographical style documentary of radio legend Shado Twala as well as prolific journalist Karima Brown. • I was the content producer of the 26-part series Our moments – which captures different iconic moments in South Africa. 

January 2011 – April 2012 Producer and writer: Why Are We So Angry – 6 x 48’ Documentary series.

 Why Are We So Angry is a six-part documentary series which explores why South Africans are still so angry, years after the end of apartheid. With interviews from high profiled politicians, cultural activists, psychologists to ordinary South Africans, we unpack this less spoken about after-effect of our new found democracy. The series was first broadcast on SABC 1 in 2012 and has been re-broadcast many times over the years. 

April 2010- July 2010 Senior Researcher – SONY FevaCasters – FuelMedia 

Sony FevaCasters was an international 2010 FIFA World Cup project whereby SONY, the official partner of the FIFA World Cup, initiated a projected entitled FevaCasters. I was a senior researcher, responsible for researching and producing content, and facilitating shoots across the country. The project exposed me to working with international clients, where I would weekly attend meetings with the client which also included conference calls between Japan, UK and South African partners. 

October 2009 – April 2010 Senior Content Producer – SABC I was roped in as a senior content producer for a six month special project commissioned by the SABC to carry out an audit of its archive programming. The project is geared at benefiting the upcoming DTT satellite TV that the broadcaster would be establishing in the next few years.

I explored a case study between a journalist and a politician where both laws intersect.
