Joshua Hay

I have recently completed my 4 year Business Science degree majoring in Information Systems. Over my years learning at UCT, I have gained an in depth knowledge of Python and C# and have experience using ASP.NET and FastAPI in the development of web apps. In addition to this, I have experience using front-end languages and frameworks such as HTML, Bootstrap and CSS. I'm always eager to learn and apply new knowledge to improve my skills and I do this best within a team environment, but also enjoy tackling problems individually. Lastly, I have experience in a variety of technologies, including data warehousing, data analysis, and business intelligence tools. I have also completed various data-driven projects, which have allowed me to apply my skills to real-world situations. All in all, I have a huge passion for software and technology as a whole.

In my third year of studies I led a team to create a Wellness tracking web app for a company called OpenBox. Used C# and ASP .Net to create a web application that acted as a tool for users in an organisation to keep track of and set personal goals pertaining to their wellbeing. In addition to this, the application allowed for teams to compete against each other through the successful completion of both personal and team wide goals. During the course of the project I utilized Azure Dev Ops for the purposes of planning, tracking and testing the solution and the end of each iteration.

In my final year of study, we worked with Impact.com. We utilized Python and FastAPI to create a product matching web application through the integration of various pre-trained AI models. Specifically, we made use of 3 pre-trained models to analyse an incoming product’s title, description and image to match to closest matching record present in the database. In addition to these backend orientated languages, I also utilised front-end languages & frameworks such as Bootstrap, HTML, CSS and Javascript. While coding the solution, I also developed the items of documentation (use case diagrams, requirement gathering & specifications, BPMN diagrams etc).

4-year honors level degree. Implemented solutions using various languages and frameworks in the backend, namely C# and ASP .NET in my 3rd year project and Python in 4th year. Designed and coded the front-end of projects using HTML, CSS and Bootstrap. In addition to coding experience, we were taught various aspects of data warehousing, data analysis and business intelligence tools. While at the university, I played for the UCT Under 20A rugby team taking part in Varsity Cup and League campaigns, as well as internal clubs at UCT.
