Ian Van Vuuren

Forty years of risk, intelligence, training, defence, policy formulation and strategic planning experience, serving inter alia as Director Air Force Intelligence in the South African Defence Force, as well as a further twenty years of experience in private and public companies in South Africa and the Middle East. 

His range of practical experiences is augmented by academic studies which have left him with numerous certificates as well as BA (Military Sciences), LLB, and MBA degrees. Other qualifications include all military requirements up to the rank of General, ISO 9001 & 31000, Strategic Leadership, Emergency Management, HSE, Assessor, Fraud Examination, Six Sigma, etc.

His specific skill lies within the domain of strategic and scenario-based planning, having developed his own unique facilitation approach, fusing together methodologies found in among others Blue Ocean, Mind of a Fox, Balanced Scorecard, quality management (ISO 9001), and risk management implementation (ISO 31000).

His strategic planning interventions (dozens) include the following:

• Facilitated the DoD strategic planning sessions, presenting the results to Parliament.
• Acted as chief strategy facilitator for the South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC).
• Assisted with developing Iscor’s (now Mittal Steel) strategy.
• Facilitated the Defence Institute’s strategic planning process.
• Develop strategic planning models for Armscor and the Def
