Overcoming barriers to hustling
You've got your ideas, and you've started thinking of yourself as a hustler: all you have to do is make the choice, do your planning, and take the leap, right?
The truth is that as much as there are internal barriers (things inside yourself that can stand in your way) to get over, there are external barriers (things in the world around you) that you have to think about too.
Let’s take a look at some common barriers hustlers face and consider potential solutions so that you can get started on your hustle as soon as possible.
Every young hustler out there has had to face and overcome barriers. Barriers are things that stand in your way. Different barriers will have a different impact on your hustle, depending on things like age, race, geography, and – most commonly - gender. Women very often have more home and community care duties that could stop them from working on their hustle. As an aspiring young hustler, we want you to have all the facts and information you need to make a success of your hustle. And knowing the challenges means you can find a solution!
Barriers to starting a hustle can include:
Childcare | Not enough capital |
Housework | Lack of support from the community |
Cooking | Lack of support from family |
Safety in the community | Fear of what people are going to say |
Caring for sick or elderly parents/family members |
Advice from a young hustler like me
These young hustlers have overcome these barriers, and they have some advice for you:
"Always have a vision, drive, and passion for your hustle and making money. Remember why you started the hustle, and who is relying on you to succeed. Be gentle with yourself, be kind. It is a tough journey."
“Plan, plan, plan, plan with your partner, your children, and your family. Everyone will benefit from you growing your hustle, so help them to understand this and create structures and routines so that everyone can pull their weight.”
What can we learn from other hustlers who overcame these barriers?
- Have a vision and be passionate about your hustle.
- You have to advocate for yourself and your business and help your family understand why this is important.
- Plan with your family.
Create structure and routine with your family and friends.
