Machines don't have it

Machines don’t have that survival-based fear centre, the amygdala, that drives our survival instinct and curiosity. But it’s a double edged sword – in overdrive it smothers our curiosity, gratification and reasoning with excessive fear, giving rise to chronic inflammation and the host of medical conditions that follow.

Machines also don’t experience gratification and a sense of purposefulness – a further drive to curiosity, clarity, awareness and creativity.

Finally, machines don’t experience empathy and a sense of awe, therefore can’t contribute to or be inspired by spontaneous creative value – the miracle of the newborn, the perfect sunset, the majestic eagle...

No folks, they’re all wrong – we can never be replaced by machines. We are awesome ... when not overcome by excessive fear.

I don't think anyone seriously thinks we can be replaced by machines. However, lots of jobs can be outsourced to machines, even in high-level professions like lawyers and diagnostic doctors. Just like the automobile cannot replace the horse as a creature, yet it can still take its role as a means of transport, other machines can do a lot of damage if left managed by people with a very particular mindset (involving maximizing the bottom-line at all costs). Sadly yes. The dumbing down of mankind of late has been somewhat distressing. What makes matters worse is that some of us cannot even respond to the stupidity since we've become victims of the ‘cancel culture’.

It's become evident recently, Ian, that stupid people can do a lot of damage. Perhaps artificial intelligence is better than no intelligence?
