Fitter & Turner Technician

Qualifications required:
Red Seal as qualified Fitter & Turner with an N4 to N6 in Mechanical engineering


Years working experience required: 10 plus


Fitter and Turner Duties

  • Maintains and repairs machinery
  • Assembles and fits components for machinery
  • Uses blueprints/plans to measure material for production
  • Monitors machinery and repairs faults
  • Fits parts required to complete the machine
  • Manufacture steel components
  • Operating and monitoring workshop mahines such as lathes, milling machines, or any other steel fabrication equipment
  • Maintenance of all the abovementioned equipment
  • Performing similar tasks when machining plastics and other materials
  • Inspecting work pieces for defects, and measuring work pieces to determine accuracy of machine operation, using rulers, templates, or other measuring instruments (i.e. micrometer and vernia callipers)
  • Changing worn machine accessories, such as cutting tools and brushes, and using hand tools
  • Knowledge of materials available and the uses thereof, including hardening and heat treatment identification
  • Oversee and mentor apprentices according to their logbook requirements.
  • Evaluate and sign off on completed duties by apprentices.
  • Provide guidance and knowledge transfer to junior team members.

Technician Duties

  • Attend to onsite breakdowns, identify fault and problem solve, with mínimal downtime to production
  • Carry out diagnosis of faults, the maintenance and repairs to all types of plant and equipment in a safe, timely and professional manner and return equipment to operational service
  • Observing machine operations to detect work piece defects or machine malfunctions, and adjusting machines as necessary, in order to improve the operating efficiency of the equipment
  • Ensure that all tools conform to customer standards
  • Estimate length of time required to complete a job and likely consequences of failure to complete work within required timescales
  • Advising & Consulting with clients on requirements
  • Identify and escalate any activity that has the potential to cause harm or damage
  • Report breakdown root causes, equipment faults and concerns to Management
  • Ensure all work is undertaken to a high quality standard and adheres to all customer quality standard regulations
  • Identify spare requirements and generate critical spares lists
  • General fitting & assembly of machinery
  • Basic electrical understanding and troubleshooting of 3Phase, Single phase and 24 Volt circuits
  • Assist with the moving, installation, repositioning of machines and equipment
  • Plan and prioritise workload to support production and ensure efficient use of working time
  • Fill in/Open job tickets/log completion of work on the computerised or manual maintenance management system accurately and timeously as prescribed by the employer
  • Ensure all personal protective equipment is identified, always available, correctly used and all associated problems are reported to management
  • Ensure all lost time, minor and trivial accidents are reported
  • Promote environmental issues and ensure all company procedures are understood and followed
  • Ensure a safe working environment exists for self and colleagues
  • Conform to all KPA requirements of the Company
  • Able to interpret technical drawings and produce technical drawing where required
  • Basic understanding of all power machines
  • Keep up with current and developing manufacturing and engineering trends regarding maintenance
  • Undertake special projects as required
  • Quality control of work by appropriate reviews
  • Actively utilise continuous improvement methodology to progress the maintenance function
  • Writing up reports and quotations as required
  • Assist in other Departments as and when required, dependant on operational requirements of the business
  • Train and assist junior staff
  • Procurement and sourcing of components
  • Customer liaison and advising customers and Management on progress status of jobs daily
  • Taking care of allocated housekeeping area
  • Responsible for all tools required to complete their job
  • Undertake continuous training and development as provided by the Company
  • Work with general hand and power tools
  • Securing of premises and activating alarm, when leaving
  • Fulfilment of all lawful and legal requests from Management
