Duties/Pligte As Technical Officer in the Department of Animal Sciences within the Faculty of AgriSciences, the incumbent will have the opportunity to utilise their technical skills and expertise to support the learning and teaching programmes and practical research.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Equipment Management: Overseeing the management and maintenance of specialised equipment, ensuring its availability and proper functioning for teaching and research activities;
  • Laboratory Support: Providing technical assistance and guidance to students and researchers in laboratory settings, facilitating practical experiments, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols;
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Assisting with data collection, recording, and analysis for research projects, as well as utilising specialised software and tools to ensure accurate and reliable results;
  • Research Support: Collaborating with Faculty members and researchers to support practical research projects, including fieldwork, data collection, and experimental setups;
  • Technical Training: Conducting training sessions for students and Faculty members on the proper use of specialised equipment and laboratory techniques;
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining detailed records of equipment usage, laboratory procedures, and research activities, thereby ensuring accurate documentation for future reference as well as cost recovery.
Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • A professional BSc, BSc(Hons), OR MSc with a focus on Biological Sciences (NQF Level 7 or 8);
  • At least three years' experience in an analytical laboratory;
  • Experience in managing laboratories;
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment in animal nutrition laboratories;
  • Knowledge of working with hazardous chemicals;
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety measures;
  • Willingness to be trained as emergency aid respondent (in first aid and/or fire safety);
  • Relevant computer proficiency in the MS Office suite;
  • Proven ability to work accurately and to solve problems;
  • Language proficiency suited to a multilingual university.
