NATIONAL MANAGER :
iLeadLAB Durban

Our client in Durban seeks to hire the services of a manager for the iLeadLAB.

The iLeadLAB is an academic makerspace that encourages the empowerment of our learning community through the development of 21st century skills and competencies via the use technology, prototyping and maker-centred learning.

The manager is responsible for overseeing and managing multiple makerspaces within the organisation. This role involves strategic planning, operational management, and fostering a vibrant and collaborative making community across all makerspaces.

The manager ensures the effective utilization of resources, supports the growth and development of makerspaces, and fosters innovation and creativity among users.

The role includes designing curriculum, programmes and activities as well as to oversee implementation of the same across all iLeadLAB's at an institutional level.


Strategic Planning and Operations:
Develop and implement a strategic plan for the overall operation and growth of multiple makerspaces.

Establish goals, objectives, and performance metrics for each makerspace.

Manage budgets, resources, and procurement processes for each makerspace.

Ensure compliance with safety regulations, policies, and procedures across all makerspaces.

Develop and maintain partnerships and collaborations with internal stakeholders, academic departments, industry partners, and the community.


Leadership and Team Management:
Recruit, train, and supervise staff members across multiple makerspaces.

Provide guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to staff members.

Foster a positive and inclusive work culture that encourages collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Facilitate effective communication and coordination between staff members and makerspace users.


Community Engagement and Program Development:
Develop and implement programs, workshops, and events to engage and inspire makerspace users.


Collaborate with heads of schools, academics, researchers, and industry partners to integrate making activities into academic programs (including WDL/Employability agenda) and research initiatives.

Foster a supportive and inclusive community within each makerspace, encouraging knowledge sharing, collaboration, and interdisciplinary projects.

Continuously assess and respond to the needs and interests of makerspace users through surveys, feedback, and data analysis.

Provide support to the Marketing department for exhibitions, tours and events.


Resource Management and Infrastructure:
Assess and acquire necessary tools, machinery, and equipment for each makerspace, considering user needs and technological advancements.

Develop and maintain inventory management systems to track and maintain equipment, consumables, and supplies.

Ensure the maintenance, repair, and safety of tools, machinery, and infrastructure across all makerspaces.

Explore and implement new technologies and equipment to enhance the capabilities and offerings of the makerspaces.


Impact Assessment and Reporting:
Monitor and evaluate the impact and effectiveness of each makerspace, including user engagement, outcomes, and success stories.

Prepare reports, presentations, and documentation to communicate the value and impact of the makerspaces to all stakeholders.

Stay updated on emerging trends, best practices, and research in the field of makerspaces and maker education.

A bachelor's degree in a relevant field

Demonstrated experience in managing makerspaces, innovation labs, or similar collaborative spaces.

Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team-building abilities.

Knowledge of maker technologies, fabrication processes, and emerging trends in the maker movement.

Familiarity with safety protocols, risk management, and compliance standards in makerspaces.

Experience in budgeting, resource allocation, and procurement processes.
