RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in reproductive health in the different species;
  • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital including participation in a 24hour service;
  • Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
  • Research and publication in scientific journals;
  • Engagement with owners, breeders, farmers and relevant industry stakeholders;
  • Community engagement;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
  • Academic selfdevelopment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Lecturer:


  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • A Masters or equivalent postgraduate degree with particular focus on companion or production aspects at the time of appointment or registered for an MMedVet(Gyn) to be completed within a reasonable time of appointment;
  • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinarian;
  • Three years of veterinary clinical experience including experience in clinical reproduction;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio;
  • Strong interest in research and potential to become an established specialist researcher; and
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.
Senior

Lecturer:


  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • An appropriate MMedVetdegree (Gyn) and/or equivalent specialty board certification
  • Registration with the SAVC as a specialist in a relevant field;
  • At least one peerreviewed paper in an accredited scientific journal as senior or coauthor.
Or

  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian
  • MSc degree with particular focus on companion or production aspects;
  • Five years of veterinary clinical experience in predominantly reproduction;
  • At least five full peer reviewed papers in accredited scientific journals as senior or coauthor.

Associate Professor:

  • A BVSc
- or BVMCh-degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;

  • An MMedVet (Gyn)degree or equivalent specialty board certification and registered for a PhD degree;
  • Registration with the SA Veterinary Council as specialist with proof of involvement in research (supported by national and international peer reviews;
  • Five years' experience as a specialist in veterinary reproduction;
  • At least five full peer reviewed papers in accredited scientific journals as senior or coauthor;
  • A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
  • Successful supervision of Masters students;
  • Evidence of involvement with PhD students;
  • The ability to attract independent research funding;
  • Participatory membership of professional bodies; and
  • Evidence of academic scholarship.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work with an emphasis on reproduction aspects;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; and
  • Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, wordprocessing and spreadsheet software.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Experience with relevant specialised procedures, techniques and tools, e.g. assisted reproduction technologies such as gamete cryopreservation;
  • Prior experience of, or intention to develop a focus for supporting clinical and research aspects of an IVF program
  • Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience;
  • Exposure to research in an appropriate field.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
