RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the general maintenance and development of various gardens in the University by carrying out a range of Landscape Services and Sports Fields Management duties according to the season using the specialized equipment or vehicle assigned by amongst others, the following:
  • Maintenance of gardening equipment
  • Adherence to all statutory compliance policies and guidelines applicable in the gardening and landscape space
  • Assist with basic agricultural and landscaping activities
  • Assist in cleaning before and after major events
  • Assist in the Sports Fields areas e.g. line markings or cricket pitch covering
  • Assist in the Compost plant area as directed by the Compost Plant Manager
  • Serve as replacement staff during seasonal leave

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 10
  • Relevant specialized equipment certificate
  • Health and Safety certificate
  • Physically fit for medium to heavy duty work

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum two years' experience in/with:
  • Operating various vehicle types
  • The use of specialised equipment
  • Exposure to large gardens and landscape settings

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Knowledge of plant and turf maintenance and equipment
  • Familiarity with health and safety requirements
  • Ability to work unsupervised and in a team environment
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good knowledge of trees, plants and lawncare
  • Ability to identify materials needed to care for a garden effectively
  • Willingness to take instructions
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Previous work in a horticultural environment
  • Experience in caring for and managing and developing gardens
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
