Sudhata Jurakan

Sudhata Jurakan is an artist based in Johannesburg who has recently completed her degree in BA Fine Arts at the University of Witwatersrand. She was born in 2001 in Durban, but she moved to Johannesburg soon after. Her interest in art began at the tender age of 6 when she started studying Hindustani classical music through Drisha music academy. Later on during her high school years she joined Darpan Dance studios where she embarked on her journey in the dance form of Kathak. Painting became her muse by the end of high school however through her degree she started to incorporate her love for painting, music and performance within her installations. Jurakan became fascinated with working with saree falls that she had found in her grandmother’s belongings. She set out to find connections between the histories of the saree, her grandmother, and her spirituality as a method of healing through patriarchal and domestic violences. Through her installations she offers a space of healing through the entangling looming webs of everyday life. Sudhata Jurakan’s most recent show ‘Entangling Paths of Consciousness’ (2023) as a part of ‘Newwork 23’ was exhibited at Wits Art Museum in Braamfontein, Johannesburg and ex tented to Art house in Wits school of Art
