Shanette Tiquin

After 28 years in education, teaching from the affluent to the underprivileged, I 

have gained a wealth of experience and consistently delivered educational 

excellence irrespective of milieu. Education remains my passion, the moulding

of youth is my contribution to my country and my service is, ultimately, unto God.

Founding Executive Head:  Curro Academy Protea Glen                    (November 2018 to August 2023)

Demographic: 99,8% Black

Staff: 72 excluding cleaning and security companies

Responsibilities: Strategic planning and development of the business; planning and development of intramural and extramural programmes including timetabling and oversight; liaising with stakeholders; staff development, oversight and appraisal; financial managing including budgeting and managing of expenditure, costing of resources and debtors’ book; sourcing and managing learner sponsorships; supervision of development and maintenance of grounds and buildings; teaching various subjects ad hoc when required. 

Particular Accomplishments:

Founding executive head who was involved in the building, establishment of the vision and inculcation of the ethos of excellence.

Won awards for plays which I wrote and co-directed.

Grew the learner enrolment from 232 to 1465 in four years. 

Umalusi accreditation.

Exceeded EBITDA/operating profit from 2020 to 2023.

Staff: 62 – 37 paid by state. 

Responsibilities: Liaising with stakeholders, SGB, staff oversight and appraisal, budgets, sourcing and managing sponsorships and donations, costing, grounds and buildings, strategic planning, systems and policies, timetable, planning, training, extra-murals. 

Teaching English home language (producing many distinctions); but I have also had to substitute into other subjects, e.g. Geography and Life Science (both grade 12) when no suitable educator could be found.

Particular Accomplishments: 

• Academic:

99 or 100% pass rate every year of tenure. 2015 and 2016 = 100% pass.

60% bachelor’s pass – 20% above Gauteng average.

Top school in Merafong for the last six years. Consistently one of the top 50 schools in Gauteng. Multiple awards and recognition for matric results from Merafong City Council and Gauteng Department of Education: district, provincial and national.

Implemented a variety of initiatives gained from me visiting 15 inner-city London schools over four years and attending international conferences.  These visits were funded by Pixl (UK based) who identified me in my first year as a young, dynamic principal of potential.  Following these visits, I was required to train my staff in these areas, as well as other management teams in the district.  My Pixl mentor has visited me in RSA on three occasions to assist in my development.

• Coached and trained inexperienced educators
• Addressed social safety issues and Initiated psycho-social support for learners in declining mining community
• Social upliftment: Assisted Umfundo (a neighbouring school) to gain sponsorship for five new classrooms.
