Martyn Eeden

My name is Beän van Eeden. I am a 32 year old South African and a very passionate mathematics teacher and rugby coach. I have a degree in Mathematics and Business Studies (Nelson Mandela University) and I obtained my Honours Degree in Education at the end of 2015. I have been involved in education for the past 10 years in various roles and capacities. On the sporting front, I’ve been a player / coach at NMU and Grey High School for the last 10 years. I thoroughly enjoy the competitive environment that comes with rugby and wish to be ‘here’ for many years to come. I have been teaching Mathematics and coaching rugby at The Grey High School since 2014. 

I have a strong rugby background, having coached and played at the highest university and provincial age group levels. In 2022 I obtained my World Rugby Level 2 Coaching Certificate. Coaching rugby is one of my biggest passions and I always strive to bring out the best in each individual that I have contact with. I believe in a holistic approach to coaching. Using rugby as a tool to develop individuals for any challenges life can have, has always been the most important aspect of coaching for me. I also aim to develop a growth mindsets in the players, by continuously pushing the players out of their comfort zones. I also ensure that positive communication is always implemented inside and outside of training scenarios. I believe we as educators must strive to develop positive, hardworking and well-rounded individuals for our communities.

My involvement in education does not end in the classroom nor on the sporting field, as I am the Deputy Head in Meriway House, Grey High School’s Hostel. I have been involved in the boarding house for the past 7 years. This has not only helped me develop a fair but strong disciplinary attitude towards my learners, but has also given me the opportunity to develop as a guardian and counsellor to my learners.
