Education / Training
About Jessica Kilian:
I grew up in Port Elizabeth and matriculated in 2009 from Gelvandale Secondary School.
I have always been interested in teaching sport and when I was 16, I started a little swimming school at my house, teaching the young children in the area basics and water safety.
During my matric year I volunteered at an orphanage, just playing with the children and helping out wherever I was needed.
During my first year out of high school, I worked for a company called Dynamic Vision, where I was a camp leader/facilitator. The company focused on teambuilding and leadership camps. We ran workshops for school children. These workshops involved development of leadership skills and team building.
I went on to study Sports Management and Development full-time through Varsity College. During those four years I worked as a lifesaver after hours for the NMBM (Metro) and was promoted to emergency response driver after seven months.
After completing my diploma, I had an opportunity to work for a short contract in America, working at a water park as a lifeguard.
From America, I went to Doha, Qatar, where I was the swimming pool supervisor at the Dana Club.
Once back in the Eastern Cape, I completed a TEFL course so that I could teach English overseas. After passing the course, I secured a job teaching English at a school in Vietnam for a six month contract.
When my contract in Vietnam expired, I moved back to Johannesburg and was employed by Active Education as a sports coach at Bryandale Primary School, where I am currently employed. I teach physical education for all grades, as well as extra-murals. My areas of specialty include swimming, hockey, soccer and athletics. I was promoted at the end of last year to Head Coach, and I now manage a team of 6 coaches. I was an assistant to the HOD of the Extra Curricular Programme at Bryandale, assisting with the organizing of events and fixtures.
Ultimately, I choose to work with children and people generally as it is something I am passionate about and I love to watch people grow and improve their skills. I am a passionate, hard-working person, who sets high standards for myself and those around me. I am loyal and dedicated and always put 100% effort into what I am doing.
