About Us

Role Purpose

The purpose of this role is to provide legal services and advice to areas within FirstRand Group Treasury, in particular:

  • Legal services and advice in relation to banking and finance legal matters;
  • To assist and support the Head of Legal in Group Treasury in certain areas of responsibility ;
  • To manage legal projects, including the management of FirstRand Debt Programmes; and
  • Legal fund structuring within the bank's Group Treasury division.

Responsibilities:


  • Provide professional legal service in the form of drafting, vetting, negotiating and advising on funding and commercial agreements;
  • Provide professional legal advice to stakeholders (including opinions and guidance) on various legal and regulatory aspects impacting FirstRand Group Treasury;
  • Formulate, maintain and review legal frameworks, policies and guidelines, as applicable and relevant;
  • Advise and provide commentary in respect of emerging legislation that may have potential impact on Group Treasury;
  • Provide input to the governance process in relation to specific areas of legal risk within Group Treasury and present on such topics, when required;
  • Engage and collaborate with different departments across Group Treasury to ensure adherence to relevant FirstRand Group policies and standards and address legal matters impacting Group Treasury;
  • Maintain own professional development;
  • Maintain legal practice efficiency through service excellence;
  • Research and implement best practice;
  • Keep abreast of legislative developments in specified areas; and
  • Maintain excellent relationships with internal clients, colleagues and external stakeholders.
Additional Requirements

5 to 8 years post articles banking and finance law experience in legal practice or as legal counsel (including experience with securitisations and debt programmes)

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum Qualification: Admitted attorney in the High Court of South Africa.
  • Experience: 5 to 8 years' post articles banking and finance law (including securitisations and debt programmes) in legal practice or as corporate counsel.
  • Advantageous to have experience in global markets and preparedness to upskill if required.
  • Proficiency and interest in the use and deployment of legal technology is required;
  • Excellent drafting skills;
  • Ability to do in depth research and provide sound legal advice;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work on Microsoft Office, SharePoint;
  • Ability to work on your own without intensive secretarial assistance;
  • Ability to manage your own legal practice effectively;
  • Ability to take initiative, proactively assist stakeholders on legal matters and upskill where required;
  • Ability to collaborate and lead; and
  • Ability to communicate with senior and executive management.
