Why I Write

Why I Write

1503202e.jpg

This piece turned out to be short. The reasons why I write are not complicated. Usually I pen a few hundred words a week. Sometimes more. Often days slip by without putting pen to paper. I post regularly on beBee, and then every so often write an article or story for a publication. Sometimes my scribbles are with no audience in mind; I do it simply for its own sake.

What then, I ask myself, are my motivations for writing? There are four.

Writing is freedom. Writing is one of the ultimate forms of creativity and it is in this creative endeavor that I find a certain freedom. Freedom of thought, being and expression. Most of all, it is the freedom to create in a form and content that I shape to my own and which is which is of me. When I write I create myself.

Writing is learning. When I want to know more about a topic or subject matter, I first read about it and find I know much less than I thought. Then, once I think I have it, I teach about it, only to find again there is still more about the matter I don’t know. Lastly I write about it and then find a third degree of thinking I know, but realizing I still have a lot to learn. Learning happens in increments of knowing and not knowing.

Writing is a sanctuary. For me as an introvert, few things are so enjoyable than sitting in silence and transcribing thoughts and awareness onto paper. It is play. The act of formulating and honing words, sentences and paragraphs into meaning often becomes an act of flow. When in flow, the world around dissolves and pure concentration and creative effort stands apart from time. Writing is a flow experience.

Writing is communicative. It entails the possibility and the hope of an encounter with a reader. In a sense it is a slow-motion process of communication. I write for the enjoyment while doing so, and often in the pleasant expectation of reaching someone. I write in the hope of somewhere, somehow touching a heart or a mind, or both.

This piece is to my own, I have learned more and I enjoyed it.

Perhaps through these short words, I reach out to another.

So happy you tagged me Gert Scholtz. Writing is like a time capsule. So nice to read again today what you wrote in 07/16. I will copy and paste my comment then, and add a now: Then; The quantity may be short(er) but the meaning could fill volumes @Gert Scholtz. Loved everything in your flow from beginning to end. The two thoughts that stand out right now are , finding "a third degree of thinking I know". Would love to see your right about each degree of thinking you know. And, because I am into the "sense of time"; "In a sense it is a slow-motion process of communication." Now; "Learning happens in increments of knowing and not knowing." Love the description of the process of learning. Thank you for writing Gert. Your writing has touched my heart and mind.

I love this piece, Gert Scholtz. Like Pamela, I recently started exercising my writing skills. Most of your reasons are very similar to my own. For me, as an introvert person, one of the most important reasons for writing is communication, and in some way it is a slow-motion process, as you nicely said. I like the part when you compare writing with a sanctuary, but for me, reading is my sanctuary. All the best and keep on writing!

Verily when your heart goes pulsating with serious sensations, mind becomes pregnant with true thoughts, eyes turn sensible with vivid visions and ears go wary with worthwhile words, then there comes an urge to express and the best is to pen down as you feel, think and witness.
