Origins of BeBee

0cb41b87.jpg

Where did BeBee come from? Twenty years ago, social media did not exist. I did not even have internet connection at work or at home. Mobile phones were rare, and those on the market doubled as doorstops. How things have changed. Today 2,8 Billion people use social media. Right now, you are one of them, logged on to beBee. How did BeBee evolve?

1997 - I SEEK YOU

The start of social media can be traced back to 1997, to a website called Six Degrees. Named after the six degrees of separation theory, it allowed users to create a profile and befriend others. Six Degrees had 3 million users. Across the divide, in Spain, Juan Imaz started Mixmail, a site and email server. Mixmail and a later venture with Javier beBee called Canalmail, are the great-grandparents of beBee. At the same time ICQ appeared, an Israeli company that developed an instant messaging service. ICQ is derived from: “I seek you”. At its peak ICQ had 100 million users.

2000 - MYSPACE AND OUR SPACE

By the year 2000, around 100 million people had access to the internet and online engagement became more widespread. Increasingly people used chat rooms, discussions and personal posting as a virtual part of their social life. The younger generation (at the time) really caught on to net socialization through MySpace, started up in 2003. MySpace was the original social media profile website, popular in the music industry and today has 50 million users. Catering for professionals, LinkedIn was founded in 2003,  allowing for employers to post job adverts and individuals to post their resume’s. LinkedIn has 470 million users. Social media exploded on the internet in the next decade.

2004 - TWEETING POLITICIANS

Facebook started in 2004 at Harvard University - now a giant with 2 billion users. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook and Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, dropped out of Harvard to spend all their time on their new ventures. In 2006, the popularity of text messaging inspired the creation of Twitter, with its distinction of sending short tweets.Twitter has over 500 million users. Many others came; Flickr, Tumblr, Pinterest and what seems to be the trending social media platform today, Instagram, with 800 million users. Social media became widely used by business and politicians. The number one Tweet came from Nelson Mandela. Five of the most popular Tweets from Barack Obama. And of course today there are the torrential Tweets of Trump...

2008 - SOCIAL BUSINESS

Media Response, another venture of Juan and Javier, started in 2008 and in the growing online business sphere provided digital advertising services to businesses in nine different countries. More websites started to list their social media addresses, businesses would include Facebook and Twitter addresses on their television commercials and many tools were built to include social media on websites. Social media icons were everywhere and it became almost unusual to see businesses or brands without them. Personal branding and business branding became intertwined.

2015 - BEBEE ZOOMS IN

This brings us to beBee. Founded in February 2015, beBee is an affinity networking site, aimed to bridge the strictly business of LinkedIn and the pure sociability of Facebook. BeBee allows people to showcase their personal brand and market themselves to employers, clients, customers, and media. It is a great site for blogging, posting and sharing content with other users and onto other platforms. Based on blockchain technology, in February 2018 BeBee signed an agreement with Profede which will allow businesses to make customized offers directly to professionals based on their reputation and profiles through a decentralized platform. Today BeBee has 12 million users, spread across the globe.

And here I am, one of them, looking back at where it all came from.

Good memory jogger, Gert. I remember queuing up to use a big red phone box as a kid in U.K. I remember waiting for a letter from my pen pals overseas. I remember sending a cable from the post office to 'quickly' congratulate newlyweds. I remember when the world was bigger, things were slower, and communications were precious and valued. Let's celebrate 'instant' long distance chats but where the hell can we purchase a filter between brain and keyboard fingers?

Joyce \ud83d\udc1d Bowen Brand Ambassador @ beBee Interesting to think we are all of a generation that lived pre and post internet. No previous generation had it, no future generation will be without it. Many thanks for your comments and shares.

Let's hope we retain Net Neutrality.
I believe social media started as chatrooms. I learned to touch-type in a chatroom called Forty Something. That was twenty years ago. We got together, one time, to have brunch at a local Marriott. Luckily it was close to me, but people came from all over the country. I conversed with someone in the group, and another piped up and said. "You were never one to mince words, Joyce..." It was true. That's still me. I don't mince words. I used ICQ. Thanks for the memories, Gert. A travel through time--a time-capsule of sorts. Today's contributions to the joining of humans are much appreciated.

The key thing I remember from 1998 is signing up for the Company of Friends group and how I felt engaging my first post, it was a totally strange world back then, only by going back and remembering how it actually was, do we remember what a phenomenal development the World-Wide Web actually is. Thanks to Tim Berners-Lee for his extraordinary gift to make this possible, he could have made more money than Mark Zuckerberg had he made his discovery proprietary and patented. but we would be experiencing the net differently - and in modern times a hat tip to net neutrality.

Next year is my 20th year online, and I found the web more due to a chance visit to a new bookstore called Chapters which allowed people to read before buying magazines and books. I had picked up a copy of Fast Company magazine and read about a community they had started called "Company of Friends". This was led by a guy called Heath Row. Heath Row went on to follow other social initiatives including working with Seth Godin called Squidoo. I have no idea what Heath Row is doing now, but I liked the way he thought. beBee history is what is defined by beBee rather than the journey to arrive to this point. That journey may have taught the founders of beBee things that have helped them scale beBee, but the future is about exponential growth. Mark Zuckerberg is not focusing his mind on his "Hot or Not" application at Harvard University or how he is portrayed in the movie "Social Network", He has a Chinese wife and a child which he assumed would carry weight with the Chinese government, his play for China was swatted as was his play for India with the promise of "Free Internet" - the Indian government also were ahead of him, not that they were trying to stop his gambit but Zuckerberg at that time was not ready to play at that level but he had played his hand at what he knew best, which is still central to the rest of Facebook's success. The history of beBee is the history of this brand and when I first joined it, it had found a blue ocean that other networks did not focus on and grew in that blue ocean area, just like Walmart grew in the blue ocean area of rural towns, but the difference is when Walmart went urban, it had enough size and scale to make then big boys K-mart lose their space. K-Mart had run-of-the-mill leadership, whereas Sam Walton had street-smarts and scale. Bebee can choose to be a K-mart but still can be a Walmart and that means making the most of it's original blue ocean advantage and finding its Eric Schmidt.
