Not just a pretty phase

Not just a pretty phase

9a32e1dd.jpg

I happened upon an article which featured 10 award-winning women of science. The tenth on the list was the famous and beautiful Hollywood star, Hedy Lamarr. Somewhat intrigued, I began researching the life of Hedy Lamarr. What emerged was a fascinating woman who was both beautiful and highly intelligent. For Hedy acted by day and invented by night.

Hedy Lamarr invented the concept of 'frequency hopping' - in effect a process whereby an electromagnetic transmitting apparatus and receiver jump sychronously together through different frequencies and so thwarting the ability of a third party to 'listen in'.  Initially this was developed by Hedy to assist in the prevention of Allied torpedo's from being interfered with by German jamming. Hedy Lamarr took out a patent on her invention. However, she was never taken seriously by the US Navy with the result that she signed over her invention to the navy, without recognition or acknowledgement.

It was only much later in her life that she received recognition for her invention. What few however realize is that Hedy Lamarr's invention was to provide the foundation for many of the technologies that we use today. The application of her invention led directly to GPS transmission, WiFi, Bluetooth and many aspects of cellular phone transmission.

Truly a remarkable woman - a true combination of right hemisphere innovation and emotionality and left hemisphere scientific expression.

I've searched for the most formative clip, authentically portraying the life of Hedy Lamarr. Here's my choice - enjoy!

Oh God--installers... I don't know how many times I cued cable installers into necessary repairs, only to have them dis me as a dumb broad. It made me furious, and I think it showed. There was even a woman installer that came once that gave me the same sense. Maybe installers have a God Complex that makes everyone dumb. Perhaps it's not about being female at all.
I love stories acknowledging women can have more than beauty. I came up in a male field where any expression of understanding complex electronic circuits was met by incredulity. I remember one moment when I made an observation and a male counterpart looked at me with shock. "I've been here for 6 months," I said. "I hope I understand that by now." I was often simply viewed as an affirmative action statistic. I filled necessary hiring criteria. Women have come far since Hedy. It's nice to see her brains acknowledged.

Ian Weinberg You had my searching Hedy Lamarr on google – with both my left and right brain! Here are two of her quotes: "Hope and curiosity about the future seemed better than guarantees. That's the way I was. The unknown was always so attractive to me... and still is." and “"Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid." A treat of a read on a Saturday – thanks Ian.
