Dawn of affliction

Dawn of affliction

2284705d.jpg

As I pen this missive I am acutely aware of the global shutdown of daily life to which we have become accustomed. The consequence of this extinguishing of a significant component of interaction has been the devastating trauma inflicted upon the global economy. The die is however cast and for all the reasons that I will attempt to enumerate, the process will continue inexorably to its as yet undefined end-point. Thereafter we shall emerge into a new and profoundly changed space – hopefully a new dawn.

How did we get to this point?

Based on the information presented to us by the media, purporting to convey the ‘facts’ that originate from the ‘experts’ and those in positions of authority, a Corona-type virus hereafter named Covid-19 allegedly emerged from a wet market in China and jumped species to commence its infection of the Human subgroup. Thereafter, as a result of high intensity global travel, the virus established bridgeheads in multiple regions of our ravaged planet.

While it is verified that a viral organism was isolated in terms of its genetics and antigenicity, Koch's Postulates have not been fulfilled. For an organism to be established as the causative agent for an illness, the four Koch's Postulates have to be fulfilled. The Postulates are summarized as follows:

The pathogen (virus in this case) must be present in all cases of the disease

The pathogen must be isolated from the diseased host and grown in pure culture

The pathogen from the pure culture must cause the same disease when inoculated into a healthy, susceptible laboratory animal

The pathogen must be re-isolated from the new host and shown to be the same as the originally infecting pathogen

There are some further observations which are of significance:

Young children for the most part do not seem to become afflicted with the same illness despite being colonized by the same virus and thereby becoming the source of further spread.

There is a significant discrepancy in infection and mortality rates between the Northern and Southern hemispheres, with the current winter-based Northern Hemisphere suffering the lion’s share of illness.

The vast majority of those testing positive for viral presence are either asymptomatic or have a very mild illness. Only approximately fifteen percent experience a more serious illness with only approximately one point five percent succumbing. Those that are most ill and/or succumb are for the most part in an older age group and invariably have co-morbidities (other illnesses).

We are exposed to the images 24/7 of the dead and dying in clinics which can no longer cope with the influx of the afflicted. At this time the focus is upon Northern Italy. Yet in the winter of 2016-2017 in Italy, the death date due to seasonal flu was 43,336 – ten times more than the current Covid-19 mortality!

Yet the powers that be decided in their wisdom to apply blanket lockdown conditions and implement social distancing in all its forms including distant travel. The negative consequences of this action include the following:

Immunity to the virus will be stifled since our immune systems need to be stimulated by the organism. This will leave a significant proportion of the population vulnerable to future waves of infection.

Inter-human contact is a fundamental requirement for neuropsychological wellbeing and secondarily for sustaining healthy immune function – the very physiology that we’re depending upon to protect us!

The extinguishing of significant economic activity will result in considerable hardships, affecting the less affluent and indeed the more impoverished members of our communities. This will be long-lasting, based on the degree of enforcement.

It is my personal contention that the current policies that have been implemented are inappropriate and self-defeating in the long term. Major clinical centers have successfully dealt with much larger numbers of afflicted in the past and triage has been humanely and effectively implemented when required.

I personally have very little doubt that the behaviour of our species reflects a great collective fear which has been fed by fear itself and fanned by the mass media and those with malfeasant agenda's. Our fear has emerged as we progressively divorced ourselves from our true essence and that of others and the environment. The values perpetuated by consumerism and the obsession with self at the expense of all others has created a culture of narcissistic insensitivity. Symptomatically it has manifest as disparaging judgementalism, fragmenting us and creating unjustified and unnecessary conflict.

Yes, this must and will now play out. And thereafter will emerge a New Dawn. It is my hope and indeed my belief that the new dawn will incorporate lessons learned. I truly believe that wisdom and empathy will pick up on the best that we bequest to that future time and space and lead to the creation of a more inclusive and sustaining World Order.

Ian Weinberg You're most welcome my good Doctor ... take care of yourself I will keep that ENT team of surgeons in the UK in my prayers I claim that "place of safety & refuge beneath His everlasting arms" ... for each one Yesterday I caught glimpse of a nurse in Italy being interviewed ... her devotion brought me to tears ... there are thousands of WARRIORS on the front-lines in hospitals across the world ... that all need our prayers ...

A special tribute and prayers for 14 ENT surgeons currently fighting for their own lives in an ICU in the UK. Indeed this is becoming a life and death struggle.

I have devoured all the academic articles related to the Virus that I can lay my hands on and still have difficulty defining it. Major discrepancies of infection and death occur between age groups, hemispheres and in fact between countries (eg Germany vs Italy). There are even case studies of deaths of 2 young men who had the typical Corona pneumonia and who were both Covid-negative!! And so I conclude that among the variables that have been omitted from the equation are fear and negative belief. Fear and/belief that calamity will befall you and that you will become a victim will translate into illness and victimhood. I truly subscribe to the fact that it is the mind state and all its influences, most notably on immunity, that will either carry us over the line or not.

Ian, Thank you for a cogent review of the facts. This is, indeed, an overreaction and financial scar on and economy that can ill afford it. And so it goes.

Ken Boddie Ian Weinberg Cyndi wilkins Paul Walters I LOVE the music from Camelot ... reading your words Ken reminded me of this son: What do the simple folk do? GUENEVERE What do the simple folk do To help them escape when they\'re blue? The Shepard who is ailing, the milkmaid who is glum The cobbler who is wailing from nailing his thumb When they're beset and besieged The folk not noblessly obliged However do they manage to shed their weary lot? Oh, what do simple folk ... do we do not? ARTHUR I have been informed by those who know them well They find relief in quite a clever way When they're sorely pressed, they whistle for a spell And whistling seems to brighten up their day And that's what simple folk do So they say GUENEVERE They whistle? ARTHUR So they say (part one ... more fun to come ;~) A reasoned response: chocolate ... wine ... whistling ;~)

You’re so right Ken. In the eye of the storm we forgot to laugh. That special belly laugh with others near and far. Just to remind us that we’re all in this together. Thanks mate.

I haven’t left the front lines Cyndi. Survived the HIV scourge and other challenges along the way. Just remaining calm and carrying on. Thanks for the thought.

You may have something there, Ian, although it seems that the main goal is to buy time and stop our ICUs from being overwhelmed, but for now ... “If life seems jolly rotten, there's something you've forgotten, And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing, When you're feeling in the dumps, don't be silly chumps, Just purse your lips and whistle, that's the thing, and Always look on the bright side of life Always look on the bright side of life” Song by Bruce Cockburn, popularised by Eric Idol. 🤗

Ian Weinberg I agree Ian “things just don’t gel” In my spirit … I have a sense that are missing puzzle pieces The math is what mystifies me. Looking at total populations Vs the numbers of cases & deaths … contrasting with the death rate of flu https://www.health.com/condition/cold-flu-sinus/how-many-people-die-of-the-flu-every-year So how do these numbers compare to flu deaths in previous years? So far, it looks like the 2019-2020 death toll won’t be as high as it was in the 2017-2018 season, when 61,000 deaths were linked to the virus. However, it could equal or surpass the 2018-2019 season's 34,200 flu-related deaths. Overall, the CDC estimates that 12,000 and 61,000 deaths annually since 2010 can be blamed on the flu. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the flu kills 290,000 to 650,000 people per year. Today: https://www.vindobona.org/article/coronavirus-in-austria-update … a total of 279,338 confirmed cases have been reported worldwide (CASES not deaths) … The number of deaths worldwide is currently 11,587, of which 3,255 occurred in Mainland China. People are not dropping by the thousands in the streets … it that were the “case” … THEN I get it & agree with the need for extreme measures … Not arguing common sense precautions: hand washing … staying away from sick people & large crowds To me it appears over reaction … and progressive over-reaction: in turn, causing great & devastating disruption to global economy and the ability for people to work & care for their family Uncertainty is a fire that fuels FEAR NO country can economically PROP-UP or sustain people through such disruption or “affliction” … I do not see this producing the intended outcome nor does it seem realistic … I am sharing your insights ...

Great insights! Just to expand a bit on the N. Italy situation. Not only is the co-morbidities matter a reality (as pointed out by a recent article on Bloomberg: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-18/99-of-those-who-died-from-virus-had-other-illness-italy-says), there is also an aging population in the region, which can be a confounding factor in the whole model they've created to support the story. I wonder if that story would hold any water if the raw data was made available to the public and analyzed by independent scientists, not vested in this story line. Cheers
