Beautiful Buildings Around The World Part 3 - Drift House on Little Much Farm

Beautiful Buildings Around The World Part 3 - Drift House on Little Much Farm

I came across this amazing house recently and fell in love.  It's on a hill side overlooking the Sahyadri hills of Mulshi and its lake, in Little Much Farm in  Nandivali, India.  The house was designed by Shonan Purie Trehan of  Language.Architecture.Body (LAB).

The site has many view points and extreme weather conditions, the design of the roof provides shelter from the harsh sun and monsoon rains.  Three mono pitch steel roofs slant in different directions and float above the exterior and interior spaces.  A ship building fabrication team built the steel structure on site.  Exposed concrete columns hold up the roof planes and allow for large roof overhangs to shelter the deck and interior spaces.

Three distinct blocks are constructed along the slope of the hill keeping the number of retaining walls to a minimum.  The central block is double volume and connects to the upper floor of the western block and the lower floor of the eastern block.  The blocks are tied together by a deck which is on the first floor of one block, the ground floor of another and then the garden and the entry ramp.

The interiors are just as spectacular as the exteriors - notice how the triangular trusses are celebrated rather than being hidden behind ceiling board.  In this house angles (and triangles) are celebrated!

I love the slide next to the staircase - big enough for adults indulging their inner child...

Drift House is a spectacular building and I look forward to seeing more of Shonan Purie Trehan and LAB's work.

I thought the slide was great as well Franci\ud83d\udc1dEugenia Hoffman, beBee Brand Ambassador - I love the fact that it's also adult sized, I know for a fact that walking down the stairs in this house would be a rare occurrence ! The angles and the shape of the roof (plus the fact that it (and the structural beams) were highlighted in the interiors was a definite plus for me too!

Me too Jim Murray - there are very few houses or interiors that I see that I think I would not change anything here (that is apart from adding a few personal items). A feature on Shona Purie Trehan is on the cards!
