A Rally on Relevant

A Rally on Relevant

Sigg

This post is about relevants. The small orange icon at the bottom of a beBee post.

BeBee relevants are important to writers. New writers, established writers, regular writers, all writers. It shows other Bees took the time to read and take in what the writer had to say. It marks an acknowledgment and appreciation of the buzz. Comments and shares often even more so, but this piece concerns only the easy orange relevant icon.

The Online Dictionary defines relevant as: meaningful and purposeful in current society or culture. The Latin origin of the word means to "lift up" and "raise" into broader awareness.

Synonyms of the word include applicable, apposite, apropos (I like this one!) germane (no, not German), fitting, material, and pertine (sounds so melodious). And so it should Bee.

When do I find a post relevant? When it is:

Interesting in that I am learning something new or altering my view on something I had thought of in a certain way.

Entertaining in that it is witty and humorous with novel views on the world and what makes it go around.

Opinionated in its view - an opinion with which I may or may not agree but nevertheless stretches my mind.

Personal in its appeal of obstacles overcome or emotional experiences conveyed, which enrich me, the reader.

On a typical day there are some forty new English producer posts on beBee, adding up to around two hours of reading time. Yes it is a lot. But consider taking a portion of this time…..

On the beBee home screen, I sometimes go to the Producer tab to see what posts have appeared recently. Of people I am not (yet) following and hives, I don't (yet) belong too. Most often I find new and enriching posts and stories to which I happily click the orange icon (small note to self: do this more).

Acknowledgements of posts are especially significant for new-comers to the beBee platform. Perhaps they post their first pieces with some trepidation on how it will be received. Others may be more established writers coming from other sites to see what the buzz at beBee is all about. Whatever the motivation of the newer Bees, what better than the signal of value and acceptance of other Bees? (big note to self: do this much more).

That's not to forget about the regular writers on beBee. Those who you enjoy, follow and who regularly produce posts to your interest. They too revel in the dopamine-stings of the orange bee at the bottom of the post. It keeps them going - why else would they continue to write?

In full acknowledgment that what you find worthwhile on beBee is personal and subjective, a friendly request:

Have a look at the Producer tab on the beBee home screen, at posts in hives you are not a member of, and posts of people you may not be following. Be generous in taking some time to read it, absorb it, and if you deem it so...

...click the relevant button.

Gert, this is a very important topic to discuss, especially due to the large disproportion between the number of views and the number of Relevants, not to mention the number of comments. For me, the first praise to a post I read and enjoyed is to hit the relevant button. But sometimes the Relevant is also award for efforts, especially when it is about someone's first post because I always remember the excitement I felt when I published my first ever post, just on beBee.

This buzz is definitely relevant as it ticks all the boxes for me Gert Scholtz Thank you :) As CityVP \ud83d\udc1d Manjit says " Relevance is not about acknowledging the quality of the writing, but far more about acknowledging the quality of the human being here and the message that they are trying to convey " More like a pat on the back to say your doing good and if we add a comment of value then the writer receives inputs to make the buzz more successful. Thus the message of the buzz is received and acknowledged. Relevant to me is more like an acknowledgment of affinity that the buzz resonates with me or has added some value to me.

Ken Boddie Thank you for the elaborate comment and I agree with you. I think a relevant can be a first and basic indication of acknowledgment to a writer. At times I read posts which I find interesting but do not have what I think is a comment of value to add – then a relevant may be well-placed. When it comes to building bonds and affinity then considerate comments are most valuable – such as those that you so kindly offer on the beBee platform. Thanks again Ken!

Harvey Lloyd Your idea of differentiating the relevant responses is a good one. Perhaps this will in effect be achieved when beBee introduces stings to posts and authors. Thank you for the thoughtful comment Harvey.

The only reason I push the relevant button, Gert, is because I understand that others count or collect 'relevants' like medals or bonuses. I must admit to not really understanding what a higher number of 'relevants' achieves in terms of the life and exposure of the buzz. I prefer to show my appreciation of another bee's buzz by taking time to formulate a comment, as in this case, so that I may, hopefully, initiate a response and, in some cases, an on-line 'conversation'. I am, of course, referring to comments relating to the content of the buzz and indicating that the reader has read and understood the buzz. I am not referring to 'throw away' (albeit polite) comments such as "Great buzz" or "Thanks for sharing". For me, nothing indicates the success of a buzz more than a healthy series of meaningful comments, often resulting in interaction, not just between the buzz author and commenter, but between others who may wish to jump into the 'conversation'. It is easy to read or partially read a buzz, press 'relevant', then move on, but it takes more commitment to read in detail, show your understanding by sending the author an appropriate comment, and hopefully receive a respectful response. I respectively suggest that 'Relevants' are like mere remote pats on the back. They are easy to proffer and evaporate like ghosts. Respectful, logical, sometimes comical, or even poetic comments, however, are what ultimately cement affinity and create bonding between bees, resulting in our each forming our groups of Fbees (favourite bees).

Although i appreciate the goals of the relevant button i also think that a relevant, like or other quick clicks mean something different to each reader. On some occasions i think something is "relevant", meaning it is a present day understanding or opinion of current events. In affinity networking though, i believe, the relevant button also means agreement. I also think that the relevant button looses its meaning when folks run through comments or posts and just click everything. Maybe three buttons are needed. Read...Relevant...Agree. The writer may enjoy the number of relevant because they have defined what it means. This doesn't mean that each reader has the same definition. All that being said.........I do believe that if you have read something you should offer up a click on relevant to let the writer know it is or a comment that better expresses your thoughts.

Very good reminder Gert Scholtz. I know there have been times I read, comment and then I'm quick to repost and forget to hit relevant. I actually will feel bad if I can't recall and I'm not able to find the post w/out going to the person's profile. I think another thing that is important, when we see people posting and they have zero relevant's yet the subject matter may be very interesting to people in certain hives... maybe it's just been missed? So I will read, possibly not comment but relevant the buzz and post it to hives I think are appropriate. People who do take a chance and produce their first buzz or two w/out interaction may not feel the desire to come back.

The key takeaway for me in what you said about "relevant" is having our own standard of what we think is relevant. If our standards are wise then what we consider relevant is that wisdom, if we are simply reacting in terms of social convention, then that is simply spreading some love, and what is the harm in that? Ultimately how I hit the relevant button is because I have found actual relevance - and here the great missing word is AFFINITY. I have a strong affinity with much of what you write, if not all. For me affinity and relevant are a loop that feed of each other. Both of these are beBee terms, but they are terms that emanate within us. Each time I press the relevant button, I am pressing the affinity button also. I can't or at least won't separate the two. Over time that means less becomes more, and that is how we are in life - we are not just planet dwellers, or nation dwellers, or city dwellers, or neighbourhood dwellers - at each successive iteration of relevance we move closer to home - and then in that home is a heart and in that heart is both affinity and relevance. If my relevance is what others think is relevant then I give power to people to effect my heart, but if my heart is relevant I find the power in people by appreciating the relevance of their heart, then I not only know myself but I know you even more because I see you - or at least relevance as in your heart and that is the appreciation I send most, when I click on the relevance button. That is not about acknowledging the quality of the writing, but far more about acknowledging the quality of the human being here.

I understand the use of relevants as a tool for encouragement, and this is especially important in a relatively new social network like beBee, but hopefully at some stage in the near future, the motivation to hit the relevant button will be increasingly based on merit. We'll have stickers soon, and I am looking forward to seeing how that will change the dynamic.

Brilliant buzz, Gert. One thing I know for sure: your writing is always relevant to me! And I likewise appreciate your "dopamine-stings" of relevance on my posts, as you deem appropriate. Ditto that for all bees who have interacted with my blogging. Many thanks to all of you. Keep buzzing and being relevant...
