Job Advert Summary:


The incumbent is responsible for leading the design and implementation of the Talent strategy and Learning and Development strategy, policies and processes to ensure the development of capabilities, competencies and skills required to successfully execute the organisation strategy.

This role will oversee the strategic direction of the Learning & Development people function within PnP, which will encompass the critical skills required to deliver the overall PnP business strategy.


Duties & Responsibilities:


Strategy design, enablement and implementation

  • Develop and implement an integrated talent and leadership development strategy based on the strategic business, EE, and succession requirements
  • Develop and implement an integrated learning and development strategy based on the strategic business and learning requirements

Talent and Performance Management design, implementation and monitoring

  • Refine the overall organisational performance strategy and incorporate new practices in alignment with set performance goals.
  • Develop a structured approach to talent management and succession planning that offers effective development for our people and ensures long term business continuity.
  • Ensure organisation wide upskilling and coaching on leading practices in performance management to ensure organisationwide understanding.
  • Oversee the execution of talent management and succession for critical & scarce technical roles across Pick n Pay

Learning and development solutions and implementation

  • Ensure that quality workplace skills plans are aligned to the business strategy; BBBEE scorecards; statutory requirements; organisation and individual capabilities
  • Implement and manage learning systems to enhance the delivery of learning and development interventions
  • Maintain strategic oversight of the coordination, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development interventions, ensuring continual alignment on development interventions to HR and business strategy
  • Ensure development plans and implementation thereof linked to performance and talent management initiatives

Leadership development

  • Manage and oversee the design of the Leadership development curriculum that supports the leadership development strategy and that are aligned to the PnP Leadership framework
  • Source Leadership development programmes and partner with external institutions and ensure that quality programmes are targeted at the appropriate groups and individuals to build a diverse leadership pipeline

Talent system, processes and solutions

  • Identify fit for purpose Talent systems that are aligned to the People Plan and its strategic priorities
  • Stakeholder Management
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure learning and development as well as talent and leadership development opportunities are proactively addressed and interventions are successfully implemented
  • Ensure that SETA development opportunities are optimally utilised and form strategic partnerships with universities and external learning institutions

People Management

  • Take full responsibility for performance management of all direct reports, focusing on all aspects of sound people management:

Financial management

  • Develop, review, forecast and track learning and development budget
  • Ensure SETA funding requirements are accurately forecasted and reported, and grants are recovered based on forecast

Minimum Requirements:


  • Relevant degree (e.g., B Comm / HR Business / Psychology); postgraduate degree advantageous
  • 10+ years' experience at Senior management level
  • Expert Talent Management knowledge
  • Expert learning and development knowledge
  • Expert understanding of all learning and skills development related legislation, industry and statutory bodies
  • Understanding of learning and development market trends and best practice
  • Strong strategic learning and development background, preferably in competency based learning and development
  • Experience in change management initiatives generic and in relation to the introduction of Talent Management initiatives
  • Experience in Leadership Development, Coaching and Performance Management
  • Demonstrated ability to drive the learning and development strategy, methodology and offering across different organisational levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive the Talent, Performance, Succession and Leadership strategy, methodology and offering across different organisational levels
  • Experience in a retail organisation where responsibilities included leading Talent, managing a Learning and Development team and execute business strategies and priorities
