The core purpose of the role


The Chief Chemist role is to ensure an effective technical and analytical service in support of the Central laboratory's mandate.


This role supports the strategy by

  • Managing nonroutine wet chemical, instrumental and specialized analysis that cannot be conducted at the mills as their nature may be investigative, or ad hoc or of special nature requiring different type of instruments or skills in support of the Barloworld Business System (BBS) & efficiency programs and food safety and quality systems.
  • Providing scientific and technical expertise to productrelated divisions within Ingrain.
  • Overseeing the coordination of the combined ring analysis program and participation in internal and external proficiency programs. To ensure that all group laboratories provide a similar, effective and consistent analytical service to operations.
  • Maintaining an effective Laboratory Quality Assurance system to ensure compliance with all required standards.
  • Ensuring a wellorganized and equipped lab.

Technical Competencies

  • A strong foundational understanding of analytical chemistry, food chemistry and microbiology
  • Interdisciplinary knowledge of agronomy and environmental sciences.
  • Understanding the Concepts of Quality and continuous improvement
  • Measurement, Metrics and Analysis of Process Performance.
  • Process Knowledge relevant to operations
  • Knowledge of Analytical techniques including Techniques for Product and Service Quality Control
  • Statistical knowledge incl. the use of Statistical Techniques to establish trends, monitor improvement etc.
  • Data Analysis, Information Management, Review and Reporting
  • Decisionmaking skills with the ability to look at the bigger picture. Understand how analytical data impact supply, business, regulatory agencies, and human and environmental health.
  • Good laboratory practice (Technique)

Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of SAP procurement and SAP-Plant Maintenance processes.
  • Familiar with Relevant legislation e.g. Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act 32 of 1981, Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Seeds and Remedies Amendment Act 48 of 1950, Consumer protection and relevant labelling laws.

Qualifications
BSc or B-Tech in Analytical chemistry, Food Technology or equivalent.


Experience
5-10 years in similar environment, preferable food industry.


Salary:
From R981,180.00 per year
