PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

  • The purpose of this role is to work safely together with Smelter Secondary Operations Supervisor to execute activities within the Fluidised Bed Incinerator and CRP with direction from management with mínimal supervision;
  • The Operator must monitor and report all the process, quality, risk and hazard parameters. (Material movement and storage, copper leaching, copper cutting, leach residue produced, crushed BRT slag and copper electrowinning, blender, fluidised bed incinerator processes);
  • Operational KPIs, Metal Management, Permit to Work, SHEQ standards and employee coaching and behaviour must be accurate to ensure proper shift management and control;
  • Support for stocktake preparation to ensure that all material is accounted for during the stockcount periods;
  • The role requires a person who will work with initiative, complying to SHEQ standards, with mínimal supervision and takes over the Supervisor's role whenever the need arises;
  • Operating the plant at the highest quality using the SCADA systems whilst ensuring no environment incidents are experienced.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

PRODUCTION TARGETS & DELIVERABLES

  • The senior operator ensures that all the process equipment in FBI and CRP are operated in a safe manner;
  • All the process parameters are monitored and recorded hourly, any deviations reported timeously to the Supervisor/Process Engineer/ Process Leader;
  • Housekeeping standards are maintained high at the Secondary processes and other areas;
  • 100% participation during stock count to ensure correct labelling and proper evaluation of units. No writtenoff bags found during stock count should be encountered;
  • All the BRT slags received per month should be crushed at month end for metals declaration purpose (when required);
  • All the BRT blister copper received per month should be cut and sent to Induction Furnace for atomisation at month end for metals declaration purpose;
  • Leaching leach of 1 ton of atomized copper per shift;
  • Crushing crush 5 to 6 tons of BRT slag per shift (when required);
  • Incinerate 4 tons of carbon per day;
  • Electrowinning 2 tons of copper per week;
  • Processes and people are led with intention for zero tolerance on SHEQ.

TRAINING OF OTHERS

  • Ensure an effective transfer of process and safety skills within the department;
  • Be selfmotivated and drive positive team culture;
  • Coaching and PJO monitoring and sign off for competency.

OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES

  • Drives timeous and accurate reporting through production logs & performance feedback on shift basis;
  • Ensures that all products and byproducts generated are weighed and sent for sampling for metal balance purposes;
  • Ensures that daily production targets are achieved & feedback is provided to the supervisor/Process Engineer/Process Leader;
  • Ensure all equipment is operated in a safe manner and all the process parameters are monitored timeously;
  • Ensures safe storage of material in bags and assist with stocktake preparations;
  • Ensures all customer material is consumed within the planned production timelines;
  • Ensures optimum leaching and electro winning process (Cu 5% in the leached residues);
  • Safe and efficient boiler operations with the desired water quality met.

SAFETY COMPLIANCE

  • Correct adherence to SHEQ & operational procedures for the department;
  • Ensure that there is full compliance with the SHEQ procedures for people and equipment and product;
  • Be able to assess risk and communicate this to relevant stakeholders when issuing permit to work;
  • Report incidents & near misses timeously;
  • Identification of risks and hazards in the plant, process and mitigation of such thereof;
  • Participation and leading the 5why process, RCFA and ICAM incident investigations.

COST

  • Suggest methods & suggestions to improve safety, waste reduction, productivity, and cost management
  • Cost management and control of consumables and capital equipment through optimisation projects and suggestions.

QUALITY

  • Ensuure that all the process equipment is operated according to standard working procedures;
  • Ensure that all the process parameters in line with the targets set;
  • Ensure that the measuring equipment such as online gas monitors, temperature probes, flow and pH meters and functioning properly before start of the shifts;
  • Check the copper content in leach residue before transferring to the Arc Furnace range between 2% to 5% of copper;
  • Check the physical contents of products before transferring to other departments to avoid production delays;
  • Carbon content in ash product should be less than 0.3%;
  • Ensure that product blended is homogenous and carbon content is more than 30%;
