Mechanical Design Technician


An exciting opportunity exists for a motivated Mechanical Design Technician to join a well-established company in the truck and trailer industry situated in Stikland Industrial, Bellville.


This position is ideal for someone that has a passion for engineering design, that drives excellence through consistency, are able to think critically and has a practical approach to solving problems.


Core responsibilities of the position are:

  • Develop detail mechanical designs, including 3D modelling and 2D drawings.
  • Perform engineering calculations to support design work.
  • Prepare and maintain bills of materials.
  • Attend design reviews.
  • Take responsibility for the technical soundness of designs.
  • Perform calculations for materials and weight distributions.
  • Investigate technical issues and implement the appropriate corrective measures.
  • Ensuring compliance with customer and engineering standards.

Critical performance areas of this position:

  • Minimum number of BOM changes.
  • Number of reworks minimised due to revision control and fewer technical/drawing mistakes.
  • Minimum wastage due to the successful optimization of material.
  • Better products at lower cost.
  • Creating a proper foundation (technical library) for future projects.
  • 100% Adhering to SA road legislation.
  • 100% Pass on roadworthy test & NCRS certificates.

Desired experience and qualification:

  • Ndip /B Tech Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 3 years experience in mechanical design and engineering.
  • Provicient in the use of CAD software, such as AutoCad, Solidworks.
  • Experience in CREO or Inventor software will be advantageous.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Excellent analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
