Job Title: Principal Researcher Plant Breeding

Location: Gauteng, Johannesburg

Salary: R1,200,000 - R1,800,000 per annum

Key Responsibilities:

• Identifies adaptive or new research needs and conducts independent and specialized research as an internationally renowned specialist.
• Conceptualizes and initiates new projects, develops research plans, and writes proposals.
• Leads trends in research with specialist knowledge, impact, and influence, testing innovations through excellent quality research experiments and tests.
• Promotes evidence-based policy making by sharing research findings in a manner accessible to the public and policy makers.
• Markets research expertise at national and international platforms to increase visibility of the ARC brand and enhance income generation and innovation from partnerships.
• Identifies and pursues strategic research collaboration opportunities.
• Mentors fellow researchers and postgraduate students.

Requirements:

• PhD or DSc in plant breeding, genetics, genomics, or a related discipline. A combination of one or more of these is an added advantage.
• More than 10 years' experience in a relevant scientific research environment, post-Ph.D., with a proven international record of accomplishment.
• At least 40 peer-reviewed publications in recognized international journals.
• Managerial qualifications will be an added advantage, along with a proven track record of research project management.
• A proven record of generating external income for programmes and projects, with a minimum of international funding and participation in international projects, preferably as the PI or SA lead.
• Registration with scientific and professional bodies is an added advantage.
• A proven record of being an invited international speaker or participating in high-importance international events.
• A proven record of expertise and scientific standing acknowledged at an international level, with measurable outcomes on an international level.
• A proven track record of mentoring and supervising/co-supervising other researchers and students' development, including supervising or co-supervising two Post docs, three PhDs, and four M.Sc.s every five years.
• A proven track record of building national and international partnerships and networks.
• A proven track record of strategic and operational planning skills and expertise.
• NRF rating will be an added advantage.
• A valid driver's license is required.
