Senior Manager Innovation

Mission


The Senior Manager Innovation is responsible for the identification and development of new strategic, transformative and innovative products and services for MTN South Africa.

This includes the development of new business opportunities with 3rd parties, universities and partners through collaboration and will be achieved through:


  • Designing, implementing and managing an innovation pipeline that includes scouting for and identifying innovation and novel business development opportunities;
  • Incubation & acceleration of projects in the innovation pipeline and developing strategic business opportunities for monetisation;
Key Responsibilities
Innovation Management & Business Development

  • Support the Executive and General Manager of Strategy in the development of the roadmaps and business plans that define MTN SA's medium
- to long-term strategic goals and objectives.

  • Identify and develop new strategic, transformative and innovative products and services.
This includes the development of new business opportunities with 3rd parties, universities and partners through collaboration and will be achieved through the following:


  • Design, implement and manage an innovation pipeline by scouting for and identifying innovation and novel business development opportunities;
  • Incubate & accelerate projects in the innovation pipeline and develop strategic business opportunities for monetisation;
  • Grow, develop and manage MTN SA's innovation partnership network to assist with the building of a future innovation pipeline and collaborate on development and monetisation of the existing innovation pipeline.
  • Lead the UX Design, opportunity quantification, solution modelling and Go-ToMarket solutions for all pipeline initiatives.
  • Manage and evaluate portfolio data and the innovation pipeline to assisting strategic decisionmaking and GotoMarket processes.
  • Design, research, develop, analyse and recommend new concepts as well as innovation strategies to the commercial business units and support functions.
Governance

  • Setup of a partner management framework for MTN South Africa that includes a process for onboarding innovation partners, collaborators and innovators;
  • Setup and manage an innovation pipeline for MTN SA that includes the ingestion of ideas from internal and external stakeholders, hackathons, ideation sessions, etc.
  • Setup the necessary governance structures and controls for the area and ensure that meetings and governance structures function effectively;
  • Participate in ad hoc and operational meetings and workshops as and when required
  • Provide regular reports and inputs into reports for external governance forums/functions at process and functional level
Escalations

  • Manage and resolve escalations that have impact on critical path of service delivery
  • Escalate issues that will result in significant time, scope, employee/customer or cost impacts if not resolved
  • Manage and provide solutions to issues that require formal resolution
Project Management

  • Set up and manage project governance meetings as and when required;
  • Create and lead crossfunctional teams (internal and/or external) for the projects relevant to the area;
  • Identify and review and identify key risks, issues, and dependencies and set mitigation actions for projects relevant to the area;
  • Provide input into projects initiated outside of Strategy that requires input and support
Performance

  • Support the responsible MTN SA business units with the research and development process of new strategic and transformative products, services, innovations, technology and programs from the initial planning phase to implementation or production;
  • Do scenario analyses and track of all the costs related to the creation of these new products, technologies and recommend on opportunities that are worth pursuing;
  • Review performance against agreed KPIs
  • Create and monitor plans for continuous improvement against KPIs
Reporting

  • Report on a monthly basis to management relating to progress made within the subdivision and in accordance with the measurement metrics set by the organisation
  • Report on an ad hoc basis on specific projects as and when necessary
  • Report on pipeline health, size and value on a monthly basis
Budgets

  • Manage project or initiative budgets in line with business objectives
  • Manage university development project funds and innovation forum sponsorships (hackathons, development competitions, etc.)
Operational Delivery

  • Monitor, review and report on the strategic initiatives and projects across the group
  • To lead the Innovation function by Planning, Organize, Direct, Control and Coordinate research and development activities within the Organization
  • Support the Executive in assessing and approving of the Opco strategic goals
  • Maintain relationships with external industry experts to identify market trends, competitive dynamics, acquisition and partnership ideas
