    Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Safety Officer in the Safety Department to be based at the McCain Delmas site, Mpumalanga. The successful candidate will report to the Risk Manager.

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    To lead and assist the safety, health & environmental function at the Delmas plant to ensure SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) compliance, ongoing improvements, drive in zero waste culture, zero accidents, and total engagement. To assist with strategies to drive a good safety record (TIR), maintain KES & Environmental systems, contractor compliance, maintain ISO 14001 certification and comply with all applicable Safety, Health and Environment legislation and other legislations.

    KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • To assist and support the Safety Health and Environment (SHE) function at the Delmas plant to enable the safety and wellbeing of all employees and contractors through total employee engagement and the development of suitable programs to mitigate possible risks and hazards.
  • Plan, prepare the monthly SHE meetings.
  • Assist with collaboration locally and globally with all stakeholders to ensure an effective and professional SHE department at the site.
  • Proactively assist and maintain the Key Elements of Safety modules, ISO 14001 accreditation and other applicable audits and action plans.
  • Proactively lead and manage the Behavioural Observation System (BOS).
  • Proactively assist with security function at the Delmas plant.
  • Proactively assist with the clinic and laundry functions at the Delmas plant.
  • Proactively lead and manage the activities of all SHE representatives, first aiders and fire fighters.
  • Play a pivotal role in communicating the appropriate strategy and priorities to the SHE representatives, first aiders and fire fighters.
  • Coach and mentor subordinates to maintain and build a competent SHE Emergency team. Liaising and supporting all the Delmas plant functions in pursuit of a "Nothing we do is worth getting hurt for" culture.
  • Ensure compliance to all statutory requirements and McCain policies and systems. Review training materials, WSWP's, equipment specific "Lock out, Tag out" procedures, job observations and standard work procedures.
  • Training, coaching and managing all contractors as far as their adherence to Safety and Environmental regulations are concerned. Assume a leading role in promoting a safety culture.
  • Participate, lead and support all improvement activities through the McCain Competitive Edge function (PJO, BOS, Risk Assessments, etc) that relate to SHE systems.
  • Perform corrective and preventive actions and controls to ensure compliance to the safety & environmental laws including legal updates to managers.
  • Ensure daily checks lists be completed and any findings be reported, and the necessary corrective actions be enforced.
  • Work in accordance with the OHS Act, SANS, OHSAS 18001 and the NEMA, NEMAQA, NEMWA , ISO 14001 :2015 and other required legislation.
  • Safety compliance by ensuring risk assessments are done, hazard identification, safety inspections, contractor compliance, submits reports to DOL, incident investigations, COIDA reports.
  • Assist and control the PPE/PPC (Personal Protective Equipment/Clothing) on the site and ensure that stock-takes are done monthly, shortage of orders are done on time.
  • REQUIREMENTS:

  • Diploma in Safety Management.
  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years in Safety, Health & Environmental field.
  • Must have own vehicle with a valid driver's license.
  • Certification in SAMTRAC or equivalent ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, HIRA (Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment), Incident investigation, Construction Regulations.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, overtime when required.
  • Experience with working with hazardous chemicals or MHI (Major Hazard Installation) facility will be advantageous.
