We're looking for a creative, solutions-driven individual who has an interest in legal and compliance to join our Legal team.


As Legal and Compliance Specialist at Root, you will execute on our day-to-day legal and compliance operations under supervision from Root's Head of Legal, ensuring the business meets its legal and contractual obligations while supporting the wider team.

This full-time role is based at our De Waterkant office in Cape Town, offering a flexible hybrid working model.


What you'll do:


Provide proactive legal support to the Root team

  • Deliver highquality legal advice and research on commercial, regulatory, and compliance matters.
  • Draft and negotiate contracts that protect Root from risks but also foster positive, longterm relationships.

Root's legal and contract management frameworks are maintained

  • Maintain and manage all contract lifecycle events and obligations, ensuring uptodate contract information is accessible by the team.
  • Keep the Root team informed and trained on changes in laws and regulations.
  • Manage and maintain risk insurance policies for adequate protection.
  • Brief and manage local and foreign legal counsel.

With support from the Head of Legal, ensure Root complies where we operate

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations, including POPIA and GDPR.
  • Assist in monitoring and managing risk, contributing to risk assessments and privacy impact assessments.
  • Ensure internal risk and compliance controls, including privacy and information security controls, are operating effectively.
  • Maintain and implement all company policies, including information security, anticorruption, antibribery, and data privacy policies.

We are looking for someone with:

  • LLB degree.
  • Newly qualified to 1 year of postadmission experience at a reputable law firm, or a similar role in an inhouse legal or compliance department.
  • Experience advising or working at technology startups is advantageous.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Excellent drafting skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Exceptional organisational skills and a commitment to project completion.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • A curious and analytical way of thinking, and able to creatively problemsolve.
  • Motivation to learn, research, guide, and teach.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change.
