Senior Analyst/Portfolio Manager - Fixed Interest


As Senior Analyst/Portfolio Manager - Fixed Interest you be responsible for driving detailed credit research and manage select portfolios within the fixed income team.

Monitor domestic and global situations, analyse their effect on investments to ensure the successful management of portfolios. You will be responsible for portfolios' cashflows and implementation in line with stated philosophy and process. In addition, you will be required to engage clients in report backs and new business initiatives.

Performance Objectives

  • Has a deep understanding of credit analysis and various valuation methodologies required to value/price a wide variety of different fixed income instruments.
  • Has developed deep knowledge of methods and tools in other financial market domains and is able to respond to questions of interpretation and to convey understanding to other staff members.
  • The portfolio manager has a thorough working understanding of portfolio management techniques to ensure alignment with stated philosophy.
  • Will be responsible for client report backs and various engagements along with the new business team.

Research, Process and Portfolio Management

  • Drive the research process with team members
  • Manage team members to deliver cutting edge credit research

  • Aim to maintain portfolio performance that exceeds benchmarks
  • Adhere to all mandate constraints with a careful and detailed attention to:

Supervision and standards of work/Team leadership

  • The portfolio manager has a deep understanding and is an expert in multiple asset class portfolios.
  • He/ she has a wide internal and external network and is a reference point inside and outside the department on portfolio management.
  • He/she prioritises his/ her own prescribed work or may lead a team of portfolio managers. The portfolio manager takes responsibility for portfolio construction.
  • Where applicable, performs projectbased performance appraisals for team members and provides input to overall performance evaluations.
  • Manages team members actively, with clear career development plans
  • Ensure adequate supervision of daytoday tasks
  • Proactively share knowledge and development with the broader team
  • Provide thought leadership and guidance
  • Solidify a unified team approach with the Head of Fixed Income
  • Monitor mandate compliance and early warning signals with regards to portfolio management issues

Relationship building and broader Investment team engagement

  • Actively engage in team discussions
  • Provide thought leadership and facilitate discussions
  • Encourage team members to engage actively
  • Engage in a teambased cross assetclass approach
  • Provide thought leadership in Asset Allocation meetings

Risk and Compliance

  • Responsible for embedding the highest standards of ethics, including regulatory and business conduct
  • Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk including but not limited to compliance/regulatory breaches.
  • Being alert to any possible Treating Customers Fairly ("TCF") issues and advising Compliance thereof

Marketing and Business Development

  • Drive client feedback sessions and pitches, but also empower team members to take on additional responsibilities in this area
  • Maintain relationships with clients, consultants, CIO, portfolio managers and business leads to continually improve the technical product as well our ability to position ourselves competitively
  • In addition, this role will require the holder to actively assist in the new business process, through the collaborative production of due diligence documents, business pitch presentations, tender responses and questionnaires, and to accompany the sales/service team to facetoface meetings with consultants, prospects and existing clients

Qualifications & What you'll need:


  • 510 years' experience in Managing Investments in an Asset Management/Investments/ environment
  • Registered Rep in terms of FAIS
  • Relevant finance or quantitative (maths / stats) degree
  • CFA or equivalent to NQF level 7 or strong intention to gain these
  • Strong technical and analytical ability
