Description

We are recruiting for a Director, Legal & Regulatory Affairs to join the Governance, Risk and Compliance team at Onafriq.

This role will be responsible for managing the legal and regulatory affairs function and through their team will provide (a) legal advice and guidance across the Group, and (b) manage the Group's regulatory agenda and engagements with regulators.

The role will be located in (a) Johannesburg, South Africa, (b) Lagos, Nigeria, or (c) Nairobi, Kenya.


Duties and Responsibilities
The Director, Legal & Regulatory Affairs is responsible for building and managing the Legal & Regulatory Affairs team and manages the following areas:
Legal Affairs

  • Providing guidance to the Group on legal matters.
  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating of agreements/contracts.
  • Developing bestinclass standardised legal documentation templates and groupwide governance structures for maintaining and updating templates.
  • Creating and managing a centralised platform/database of groupwide contracts/agreements to drive efficiency, improve collaboration with other departments, enhance management and reduce overall risks.
  • Providing transaction specific and adhoc legal advice.
  • Drafting, reviewing and interpreting legal policies and procedures.
  • Establishing and managing relationships with external legal counsel.
  • Carrying out legal audits from time to time to assess and monitor the legal standing of the organisation and its existing legal obligations.
  • Managing disputes and together with external legal counsel, coordinating all litigation and legal proceedings.
Regulatory Affairs

  • Providing guidance and oversight to the entire Group on regulatory matters.
  • Monitoring and responding to regulatory developments in relevant jurisdictions and advising on the impact, if any, on Onafriq and its business strategy.
  • Engaging with and managing regulators in all jurisdictions where Onafriq operates or intends to operate.
  • Providing support and guidance on establishing regulatory coverage through partnerships with key partner organisations.
  • Conducting frequent regulatory horizon scanning and advising on changes in law and regulation and how these might impact the organisation and its businesses.
  • Qualified solicitor in relevant jurisdiction.
  • Strong understanding of and experience in the financial services regulatory sector a must; in addition to general financial services regulatory knowledge and experience.
  • At least 5 years in a senior management role in legal with experience interacting at executive and board level.
  • Understanding of market and industry developments within the broader financial services sector that relate to legal and regulatory risks.
