GreenCo acts as an intermediary offtaker and service provider, purchasing power from renewable IPPs and selling that electricity to utilities and private sector offtakers (i.e. commercial and industrial users) and competitive markets in South Africa or of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).

Through its activities, GreenCo will increase the supply of, and demand for, finance for energy projects, and mobilise private sector capital more quickly towards critical and transformative capacity addition.

B. The Role in Context
Business Development Officer

Purpose of the job


The Business Development Officer will be responsible for matters pertaining to South Africa on Independent Power Producer (IPP)/stakeholder and customer engagements, managing submissions on the GreenCo IPP procurement portal, Know Your Customer (KYC) due diligence, offtake credit analysis, conducting market research and analysis, preparing presentations, and work with and enhance BD tariff tools.

Key focus shall be on the South Africa activities of the Group.


The Business Development Officer will also ensure that all day-to-day functions of the Business Development unit in South Africa are taken care of to ensure efficient running of the department.


Key duties of the Business Development Officer:

  • High-level involvement in engagements with South African IPPs, large commercial & industrial off-takers, and other buyers;
  • Geographical coverage to cover South Africa;
  • News gathering, market research, and crossfunctional liaison covering GreenCo and Business Development areas of interest as well as the relevant wider regional business macro environment;
  • Collaborating with the regional business development team in monitoring of the GreenCo IPP procurement portal, and soliciting and engaging with South African developers on their submissions;
  • Conducting KYC screening processes in collaboration with the Risk Management department;
  • Tracking and performing analysis on offtake credit risk in the GreenCo portfolio of IPPs in South Africa;
  • Detailed and stakeholderspecific tariff analysis and formulation covering national/regional benchmarks, competition offering, as well as present and future tariff setting parameters;
  • Transaction structuring of GreenCo transactions across the power generation and supply chain (offtakewheelingsupply) in Eskom and/or municipality jurisdications.
  • Contributing to creating business cases for new buy/sell power transactions in South Africa;
  • Client / stakeholder relationship management and representation of the company at appropriate industry for a in South Africa;
  • Contributing to gotomarket strategy and regulatory roadmaps in South Africa ;
  • Recommending and coimplementing operational procedures and system enhancements to meet defined product delivery and risk acceptance criteria, including trade capture, volume handling, reconciliation, statement and invoice production.

C. Qualifications and Requirements
The Business Development Officer will be expected to bring a combination of the following experience, personal attributes, and qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of overall professional working experience, preferably in business origination and client management, and exposure to financial and / or energy sectors;
  • Minimum Degree level education from a recognized university/institution in energy, business, economics, finance or equivalent additional qualifications will be considered an advantage;
  • Must be fluent in written and oral English;
  • General knowledge of finance and counterparty risk;
  • Ability to network, build relationships and work collaboratively;
  • Innovative selfstarter who can work on own initiative to problem solve and manages crossdepartmental projects.
  • Intermediate skill in working with excel, power point presentation, collaborate and project management tools.
