The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is a vibrant, diverse and dynamic university rooted in the African continent with an increasingly global reach.

UWC actively responds in critical and creative ways to the country's development needs within an ever-changing national and global context.


The primary purpose of the position is to provide strategic communication support to the Rector & Vice-Chancellor and the Institutional Planning department, but at times the role also supports specific projects in other executive portfolios.

The role mainly comprise strategic messaging, writing speeches and preparing reports, managing special projects as well as a cycle of regular internal and external communication to support the University's strategic focus.


Key results areas will include:


  • Speech writing comprises a significant part of the role and must be underpinned by:
  • deep understanding of the University within the national higher education context, its international focus, history and strategic aspirations
- research to support specific communication requirements

  • Report writing that includes quarterly reporting to governance structures and well as the coordination and preparation of the University's annual reporting to the Department of Higher Education and Training that includes the coordination and preparation of the University's Annual Report.
  • Preparation of different kinds of communication, including presentations, memoranda, campuswide communication on identified focus areas, etc.
  • The provision of editorial support for material drafted in other offices.
  • The coordination and preparation of identified strategic publications.
  • Management of substantive correspondence in response to inquiries and managing recurring communication.
  • Assistance with the management and/ or coordination and reporting of largescale strategic initiatives.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements (Qualification and Experience)

  • A relevant Master's degree at NQF level
  • At least 5 years of proven management experience
  • Advanced writing and communication skills.
  • Indepth knowledge and understanding of higher education, preferably also the policy and governance landscape
  • Excellent planning and execution skills

  • Ability to independently research complex issues
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact on all levels
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
