    An established and award-winning region newspaper is searching for a dynamic and seasoned deputy news editor to lead news coverage for print and digital platforms.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • A three- or four-year qualification in journalism would be advantageous.
    • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a mainstream daily or weekend news environment.
    • Experience gained on both weekend and daily publications will be an added advantage.
    • Extensive experience in newsroom management.
    • A thorough understanding of journalistic ethics and media law.
    • A proven track record in news reporting and feature writing.
    • Experience in collaborative team environments.
    • A valid driver's licence.

    Main Responsibilities and Outcomes:

    • Responsible for overseeing the newspaper's news coverage, managing the news schedule, developing story concepts, leading investigative projects, and creating high-quality, exclusive news content.
    • Ensure timely delivery of top-notch content with a focus on detail, speed, accuracy, and clarity.
    • Adapt to a digital-first work culture where news is published on the website before other platforms, collaborating closely with the digital editor during breaking news for continuous coverage.
    • Revise, rewrite, and edit news material from various sources, ensuring reporters are ready to publish across all platforms.
    • Act as a representative for the newspaper when needed by the Editor.

    Skills, Attributes, and Attitudes:

    • Outstanding abilities in news gathering, research, writing, and editing.
    • Above-average proficiency in the English language.
    • Familiarity with current events.
    • Understanding of matters affecting Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality and the Eastern Cape would be beneficial.
    • Networking skills.
    • Willingness to work flexible hours.
    • Passion for mentoring and supporting junior journalists.
    • Receptiveness to feedback and adaptability to change.
    • Extensive experience in the news sector.
    • Exceptional editing expertise, including a strong command of English and critical thinking abilities for fact-checking.
    • Capability to lead and motivate a diverse team of multimedia journalists.
    • Strong organizational capabilities.
    • Appreciation for creativity, inventiveness, and innovation.
