The overall purpose of the position:As the Economic Development Manager will be responsible for designing and implementing SOLA's community development and social empowerment initiatives. You will be the driving force behind maximizing the positive impact of SOLA's renewable energy projects and other business activities, on local communities and other key stakeholders.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Technical

  • Economic and

Community Development:

Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities for local economic development, job creation and community development in alignment with SOLA's renewable energy project commitments and corporate goals.

Think strategically in identifying opportunities and develop innovative solutions to support community growth and facilitate project success.

  • Stakeholder Relations: Cultivate and maintain strong relations with a wide range of stakeholders to foster partnerships and create shared value.
  • Empowerment Programmes: Develop and implement programmes aimed at empowering local communities through skills development, entrepreneurship, education, health and capacity building, with a focus on diversity and inclusion.
  • Community Investments: Identify opportunities for community investments and collaborate with colleagues and other stakeholders to allocate resources effectively and implement initiatives.

Community Context:

Understand regulatory and compliance requirements (including the BBBEE Code and Scorecards) and stay informed about evolving industry best practices.

Collate and report on data that are relevant for BBBEE compliance assessments. Understand and appreciate sustainable development concepts, community dynamics and development needs in rural South Africa.

  • Reporting and Metrics: Establish and maintain comprehensive tracking and reporting mechanisms to measure the impact of SOLA's economic development and community investment initiatives, and provide periodic updates to stakeholders. Ensure the effective planning and implementation of SOLA's community initiatives.
  • Sustainable Partnerships: Identify strategic partnerships with local communities, business, contractors, authorities and other stakeholders to support SOLA's activities and promote socioeconomic progress in the areas where we operate.
Administrative/Operational

  • Pay attention to contractual details and compliance with obligations.
  • Plan, procure, implement, monitor and give feedback on community initiatives across multiple projects and regions.
Interpersonal

  • Liaise effectively with SOLA's Stakeholder Manager, Asset Managers, Project Developers and Construction/ Operations Contractors.
  • Appoint, manage and supervise external consultants and other service providers
  • Maintain high standards of ethical conduct at all times.
  • Engage and develop strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Diffuse tense situations and resolve conflict.
  • Research and find solutions to complex and novel challenges, in partnership with various stakeholders.
Health and Safety

  • Cognisant of health and safety risks and priorities related to working in remote areas, on project sites and in community settings, as well as long distance driving.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Assessment of effective implementation of committed funds for economic and community development initiatives, on time and within budget.
  • Demonstrated beneficial impact in host communities and favorable community relations.
  • Completion of project and corporate reporting against agreed timelines and scope.

Minimum Requirements:


  • At minimum, degree or equivalent in social science, public relations, economics, sustainable development or similar.
  • Must have proven experience (minimum 3 years) in the implementation and management of ED/SED/CSI initiatives in rural communities, preferably relating to renewable energy projects.
  • Indepth knowledge of socioeconomic and regulatory contexts in South Africa, with an appreciation of challenges and opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
  • Experience working with South African government bodies and understanding of local regulations.
  • Experience in Social Impact Assessment, Environmental and Social Management Systems, Community Liaison, or Community Development is advantageous.
