Duties/Pligte


The purpose of this position is to provide support to the CERI (Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation) team at Tygerberg Campus. This will include tracking medical/research samples, inventory control of reagents and laboratory consumables through the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

  • First point of contact for visitors to the CERI laboratory;
  • Receiving samples at the CERI laboratory;
  • Managing the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS):
  • Configuring LIMS according to the operational needs of the laboratory;
  • Performing daily database backups;
  • Generating reports on LIMS;
  • Creating LIMS usernames and passwords for new staff members;
  • Training endusers in how to use LIMS.
  • Logging and tracking samples through the LIMS system:
  • Logging samples;
  • Generating plate layout reports;
  • Printing labels;
  • Executing SQL queries as needed to retrieve data.
  • Tracking the number of DNA sequences generated;
  • Updating stock records of reagents and laboratory consumables on LIMS;
  • Checking and logging samples into the Biorepository;
  • Requesting samples from the Biorepository.

Die doel van die posisie is om ondersteuning te verleen aan die SERI (Sentrum vir epidemie-reaksie en -innovasie) laboratoriumspan by Tygerberg Kampus. Dit sal insluit die naspeur van mediese/navorsings monsters, voorraad beheer van reagente en laboratorium verbruiksartikels deur die Laboratorium Informasie Bestuurstelsel (LIMS).

  • Eerste kontak persoon vir besoekers aan die SERI laboratorium;
  • Ontvang monsters by the SERI laboratorium;
  • Bestuur die Laboratorium Informasie Bestuurstelsel (LIMS):
  • Stel LIMS op volens operationele behoeftes van die laboratorium;
  • Maak daagliks ¿n kopie van die databasis;
  • Genereer verslae op LIMS;
  • Stel LIMS gebruikersname en wagwoorde op vir nuwe personeellede;
  • Lei LIMS gebruikers op.
  • Laai monsters op LIMs en speur die monsters daarop na:
  • Laai monsters op LIMS;
  • Genereer plaat uitleg verslae;
  • Druk etikette;
  • Voer SQL navrae uit om data te onttrek van LIMS.
  • Hou rekord van die aantal DNS volgorde bepaling wat gedoen is;
  • Opdatering van voorraadrekords van reagente en laboratorium verbruiksartikels op LIMS;
  • Gaan monsters na en deponeer monsters in die Biobewaarplek;
  • Vra monsters aan vanuit die Biobewaarplek.
Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • A relevant BSc degree in Science or similar;
  • Three years' relevant experience in a laboratory environment;
  • Knowledge of the LIMS system;
  • Knowledge of laboratory processes and procedures;
  • Organisational skills;
  • The ability to function in a team;
  • Attention to detail.
