    Postdoctoral Fellowships in Health Policy and Systems Research

    The University of the Witwatersrand seeks to appoint a postdoctoral fellow to contribute to health policy and systems research, with a focus on the health workforce. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of Prof. Rispel and collaborate with AFRHiCARE partners.

    This is an opportunity for cross-country comparative research and specific research in South Africa. The postdoctoral fellow will also have the chance to learn about new research methods, such as realist reviews, and travel to collaborate with counterparts in Kenya, Uganda, and the United Kingdom.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Contribute to research projects focused on health policy and systems research, specifically HRH or healthcare management research.
    • Work with various data sources, platforms, and software, including STATA, R, and qualitative data analysis using MAXODA.
    • Develop an independent contribution to the research guided by Prof. Rispel and the wider AFRHiCARE partners.

    Eligibility Criteria

    • A PhD in public health, health economics, or biostatistics, social or management sciences obtained within the past five years.
    • Familiarity with the field of health policy and systems research (HPSR), specifically HRH or healthcare management research.
    • Advanced research skills, preferably in mixed methods.
    • Ability to meet and honour strict deadlines.
    • Younger than or equal to 40 years of age.
    • Advanced English language proficiency.

    Advantageous Skills

    • Experience in research project management and ability to liaise with diverse stakeholders.
    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.

    Job Requirements

    The fellowship is initially tenable for one year starting immediately and is valued at R350 000 per annum (tax-free). Renewal for a second year is dependent on satisfactory progress and continued funding.
