Key Purpose of the role

  • To underwrite group risk scheme members and provide a fair decision which adequately manages risk. Contribute to the success and growth of the group risk underwriting division.

Areas of responsibility may include but not limited to

  • Assessment of underwriting cases and compiling an appropriate decision that is fair to the member and manages the risk to Discovery
  • Liaising with the reinsurer, broker, consultants, and members
  • Telephonic member engagement for completion of additional requirements and communication around underwriting decisions
  • Keeping up to date with product changes and benefits to ensure that all key stakeholders are accurately serviced
  • Continuously staying abreast of all digital servicing tools within the business and ensuring that the functionality is fully understood
  • Achieving and exceeding key performance metrics relating to service delivery
  • Servicing key stakeholders in a customer centric way to ensure that we live by our service principles
  • Issue medicals requirements requests to brokers/service consultants for underwriting members over the acceptable limit.
  • Link the received completed medicals to the system and allocate to the underwriters for a decision.
  • Send completed medicals to another insurer on request and/or request completed medicals from other insurer to underwrite member.
  • Access completed medicals from the various platforms
  • Verify the membership on Paradigm, that covers are aligned on SFE and Compass. Ensure member is on SFE.
  • Ensure all documents submitted are correct and completed in full.
  • Investigate reasons for anomalies on any underwriting process and troubleshoot. Look out for members that need decisions to be reapply
  • Answer all queries pertaining/related to underwriting. Ensure brokers are well informed by providing accurate information to them to adequately support clients.

Education and Experience

  • Matric
  • Medical qualifications such as a Nursing Diploma, BSc Med, BSc Occupational Therapy or similar (advantageous)
  • Microsoft Office skills, i.e. Outlook, Excel and Word are mandatory.
years industry experience in medical underwriting OR claims
