Description
Key Role: Head of Processing Africa
Purpose:
Ensure the long-term sustainability of our business by implementing value-add facilities related activities within accepted norms and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
Factories and Prepacking Facilities Growth Strategy Development
• Improve productivity in Factories and Prepacking facilities.
• Establish a central admin function for all Factories and Prepacking facilities to enhance efficiency.
• Develop and implement a Five (5) year growth and expansion strategy/plan to drive business growth.
• Conduct technical evaluations of Factories & Prepacking facilities and implement standardization across the continent.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to build our company image and positive reputation through industry benchmarks on cost, technology, and people trends.
Financial & Business Management
• Participate in setting budgets, monitor resource allocation, review progress, and make mid-year adjustments to ensure financial stability.
• Prepare monthly finance reports to provide insight into our company's financial performance.
• Contribute to business profitability by effectively managing resources and achieving business objectives.
People Management
• Foster discipline within the management and labour force.
• Set performance agreements, manage subordinate staff, coach, mentor, and develop successors for critical positions.
• Create a healthy labour relations environment through continuous employee engagement.
Health & Safety
• Accept and execute 16(2) and GMR2(1) roles and responsibilities.
• Implement and manage Health, Safety, and Management Systems (HSMS).
• Drive hazard identification, risk assessments, and compliance for all operations to achieve ISO45001 accreditation in South African Production Units.
Capital Projects
• Engage with internal operations managers to gather requirements for capital projects.
• Review and approve capital project requests (Capex Requests) to ensure timely execution within budget.
• Oversee the design process by internal and external engineers to deliver successful projects.
Continuous Improvement
• Constantly evaluate packing practices and develop new process flows to optimize efficiency.
• Measure water usage and report on progress to management and regulatory bodies.
• Secure grower partnerships and increase volume by 5% year-on-year to drive business growth.
• Work collaboratively with the newly established Continuous Improvement Department to drive change.
Corporate Governance, Risk, and Compliance
• Ensure statutory obligations are prepared and maintained, including fire protection, building registration, EIA, wastewater, solid waste, transport, electricity supply, and use etc. under Factories & Prepacking facilities management.
• Enforce ethical business practices and exercise oversight to ensure corporate governance, ethical, and responsible behaviour as per policies.
• Foster an inclusive culture that promotes respect and fairness.
Operational Activities
• Develop and implement data management systems and reporting for all Factories & Prepacking facilities.
• Establish and maintain equipment performance and maintenance strategies across the continent.
• Standardize Factories & Prepacking facilities across Africa to enhance operational efficiency.
• Manage warehouse operations and stock control effectively.
Accreditation Management
• Ensure compliance with relevant accreditations, including legal aspects regarding fire, water, and food safety, and Health & Safety regulations.
• Manage audits, from booking to internal audits and overseeing the audit process itself.
• Coordinate audit-related activities throughout the year.
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Operations Management, or other relevant fields.
• Postgraduate qualification will be advantageous.
• Fruit processing and packing experience is desirable.
Experience
• At least 10-15 years' experience in factories and prepacking facilities, preferably in agriculture.
• At least 5 years' experience in 16.(2) role or similar roles on Health and Safety.
Knowledge & Skills
• Technical competence to manage an export subtropical fruit business.
• Excellent people management skills across all levels of the business.
• Detailed knowledge of external accreditation requirements for local and export markets.
• Financial planning and control expertise.
• Knowledge of the legal framework for farming operations across Africa.
• High levels of computer literacy.
