Mechatronics NQF Level - 5


Duration: 4 years

Programme Overview:


Mechatronics engineering is a synergistic combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronics and computer design systems used to control and automate mechanical products with electrical signals.

These electrical signals are interfaced via a computer-based programming language. These systems are found in numerous industries such as mines, milling, petrochemical, cosmetics and motor car manufacturers.

The knowledge of Mechatronics will allow you to work and control various processes and maintain the systems to operate efficiently and effectively.

This includes knowledge of precision robotics, conveyer belt systems, milling industries, packaging systems, rail and light control, etc.


On completion of a Mechatronics certification the student will be able to:

  • Explain fundamental theories and principles of operations.
  • Control Mechatronic and assemble Mechatronic systems.
  • Test the operation and commission of Mechatronic systems.
  • Operate Mechatronic systems, do fault finding and rectify problems.
  • Perform maintenance, work according to correct procedures, use hand tools and operate machine tools to produce components for maintenance and repair purposes.

Components:

The Qualification consists of Fundamental, Core and Elective Unit Standards. A minimum of 142 Credits is required to achieve this Qualification.

The Credits are allocated as follows:

Fundamental Component:
The Fundamental component of this Qualification consists of 9 Unit Standards in both Communication and Mathematical Literacy. All the Fundamental Unit Standard totalling 36 Credits are compulsory for all learners.

Core Component:

The core component of this Qualification consists of 12 Unit Standards totalling 103 Credits are the Core Unit Standards totalling at least 3 Credits.

All the Core Unit Standards are compulsory.

  • Assemble mechanical components
  • Construct and test basic electronic circuits
  • Install, test, maintain, and commission basic electrical circuits
  • Keep the work area safe and productive
  • Mark off basic engineering shapes
  • Operate and monitor a lathe
  • Perform basic welding/joining of metals
  • Read, interpret and produce basic engineering drawings
  • Select, use and care for engineering hand tools
  • Select, use and care for engineering measuring equipment
  • Select, use and care for engineering power tools
  • Use a Graphical User Interface (GUI)based word processor to format documents

Elective Component:
The elective component consists of 9 elective Units Standards. The learner must choose Unit Standards totalling at least 3 Credits to complete the Qualification.

(Elective component will be based on demand)


Career Opportunities:


On completion, the certificate holder will have access to careers in any of the following sectors: Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Pneumatics and Hydraulics, Robotics, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Computer Numeric Control (CNC), Industrial Information Technology, automotive sector and Precision Welding.

As a Technician, Technologist or Engineer depending on the level of the qualification completed.
