Description

  • The main purpose of this position is to develop, implement, and improve the environmental management system, standards, processes and procedures for the SARB's environment and ensure compliance thereto.
  • Detailed Description

Develop the SARB's environmental and waste management (EMS) framework, procedures, processes and standards, and ensure that it is appropriately communicated, adopted and implemented by all stakeholders.


  • Advise and guide the business in the implementation of the EMS systems (policies, procedures, standards etc) and the prioritisation of EMS activities.
  • Develop training material and provide training and create awareness to facilitate understanding and adoption for appropriate implementation.
  • Identify, communicate and facilitate the implementation of changes in the EMS in the Bank.
  • Develop a framework in alignment with international with international standards (EMS
  • ISO14000) and set progressive targets to meet compliance levels as per generally accepted industry standards.
  • Conduct inspections and compile impact and aspect reports (IA) and keep records thereof, track and drive closure of IA across all operations and/or projects.
  • Recommend mitigating measures, guide and monitor the implementation of the mitigating measures and ensure that deviations from and nonconformance to the policy, procedures and standards are addressed.
  • Ensure that all major and registered projects have controlled EMS plans, and appropriately registered in keeping with acceptable standards or adopted framework.
  • Prepare management reports for all audits, findings and IA, and engage roleplayers in drafting improvement plans.
  • Develop a universe for all related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for various codes of work.
  • Develop study material (manual) and deliver/coordinate the training of all technical and operational staff as per EMS guidelines.
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders to address cross cutting issues, e.g. noncompliance or new initiatives.
Job Requirements

a minimum of a BTech or Degree specialising in Environmental Management OR equivalent technical stream (NQF7);

  • Professional registration with a recognised statutory council and
- a minimum of five to seven years' experience in a Environmental Management position, with at least 3 year exposure in built environment and/or mining sector.

The following would be an added advantage:
International certification in ISO14000 as auditor or equivalent

  • Exposure in a highly technical, projects and complex operation environment eg. multiple discipline office, kitchen and plant area.

Additional requirements are as follows:
Industry, organisational and business awareness knowledge and skill;

  • Extensive knowledge of Occupational Healthy and/ OHS Act 85 of 1993 and associated regulations; the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 and associated regulations.
  • Building and Construction Regulations (OHS Act 85) knowledge and skills;
  • Food health and safety requirements (HASAP) knowledge and skills;
  • Auditing and continuous improvements framework knowledge and skills;
  • ISO14000 Environmental Management System knowledge and skills;
- business contingency planning knowledge and skills
- governance legislation risk and compliance knowledge and skills;
- emergency or disaster management/recovery knowledge and skills;
- food safety legislation knowledge and skills;
- accident and Incident Investigation knowledge and skills;
- effective communication skills;
