    Description

    Pipeline Design Engineer Role

    The Pipeline Design Engineer will work with the Consultant Pipeline Design Technologist to design large diameter steel pipelines for augmentation, repair, or renovation of the organization's vast distribution network. This role is part of the Pipeline Design Team responsible for executing the pipeline engineering design function.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Design and Hydraulic Analysis: Assist in route selection for steel pipelines, undertake hydraulic design for pumping and gravity pipelines (600mm-3500mm in diameter), and produce longitudinal section drawings based on hydraulic analysis.
    2. Pipeline Selection and Materials: Perform pipeline selection of materials for steel grade, lining, and coating system, as well as backfilling material, and have a thorough understanding of cathodic protection systems and their impact on pipeline design.
    3. Structural Design: Analyze the pipe to soil system, design loads, deflections, and pipe buckling, and design all pipe specials such as bends, miters, and compensation plates.
    4. Compilation of Contract Documents: Compile contract documents including design criteria, design reports, specifications, bills of quantities, drawings, and relevant standards.
    5. Team Management: Direct, manage, and develop junior engineers within the Pipeline Engineering Design Team, reviewing team outputs for technical accuracy and compliance with set pipeline or civil design standards.

    Requirements:

    1. Civil Engineering Degree: Formal Civil Engineering Degree (B Eng or BSc Eng Civil Engineering)
    2. Professional Registration: Professional Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa
    3. Experience: 4-6 years applicable post graduate experience with a minimum of four years' experience in the design of large diameter steel bulk water pipelines and related structures, three years construction experience
    4. Liaison and Communication: Liaise and effectively communicate with other departments and stakeholders in the industry

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Bulk Pipeline Design and Hydraulic Modeling: Knowledge of bulk pipeline design and hydraulic modeling
    • Applicable Design Standards: Knowledge of applicable design standards (AWWA, SANS, PD 5000, BS EN 13445, BS EN 1295)
    • Geotechnical Recommendations: Ability to interpret geotechnical recommendations into designs
    • AutoCAD and Design Software: Basic knowledge of AutoCAD and design software (Civil 3D, TechnoCAD /IDAS/PipeMaker)
