    Job Summary

    The Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technician (MLS/MLT) performs and monitors various medical laboratory analyses of patient specimens to provide accurate test results for confirming clinical diagnoses and treatment therapies.

    Description

    Essential Functions:

    1. Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff in a manner consistent with Jefferson's values.
    2. Properly processes specimens by following established protocols for proper patient identification and labelling. Specimen collection via phlebotomy and venipuncture may be required at specific hospital locations as needed.
    3. Determines the acceptability of specimens by performing visual inspections, including acceptable QC recognition of abnormal/unusual results. Documents unacceptable specimens according to policy and communicates specimen requirements to appropriate personnel.
    4. Reports, documents, and communicates critical values to appropriate personnel per hospital policy.
    5. Completes reports and maintains records and documentation of test results by entering and verifying data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
    6. Operates analytical equipment for medical laboratory tests. Monitors, cleans, calibrates, and maintains devices and instruments according to manufacturer specifications and relevant standards.
    7. Adheres to established quality control policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy and validity of laboratory results. Recognizes factors that affect measurements and takes appropriate action according to protocol.
    8. Maintains clinical competency by annually fulfilling regulatory requirements and participating in hospital/laboratory in-services for educational purposes.
    9. Performs specimen collection via phlebotomy and venipuncture at specific hospital locations as needed and provides technical education and training to other technicians and students if requested.

    Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

    An Associate's Degree in a related field of Science, preferably from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology or completion of Military Medical Laboratory specialist Training is required. Prior training in a laboratory setting and ASCP or equivalent certification are preferred.
