    Delaire Graff Restaurant Sommelier Position

    We are seeking an experienced Assistant Sommelier to enhance our wine service and provide exceptional guest experiences. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for wine and outstanding hospitality skills.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Training of restaurant staff in wine knowledge and service standards;
    • Maintaining the presentation and temperature of all beverages, including wines, spirits, and other drinks;
    • Updating the wine list as necessary to ensure it reflects our current offerings and meets guest preferences;
    • Placing orders for wines and other beverages with suppliers, with a focus on discovering new and exciting options to add to our portfolio;
    • Collaborating with suppliers to source high-quality products and build strong relationships;
    • E nsuring the wine service area is set up and ready for service each shift;
    • Managing inventory levels and equipment to prevent stockouts and minimize waste;
    • Conducting regular temperature checks to maintain optimal storage conditions;
    • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of decanters and other wine-related equipment;
    • Implementing measures to minimize losses through breakage, theft, or incorrect orders;
    • Performing monthly stock-takes of beverages to ensure accuracy and compliance;
    • Fostering guest satisfaction by providing expert wine recommendations and personalized service;
    • Complying with all applicable laws and regulations regarding the sale of alcoholic beverages, including those outlined in the Liquor Act (No. 59 of 2003).

    Requirements:

    • Grade 12 certificate and completion of the Cape Wine Academy or WSET Level 1 course;
    • Prior experience as a wine tutor or sommelier (1-2 years preferred);
    • In-depth knowledge of wines, including grape varieties, regions, harvest times, climates, soils, and winemaking processes;
    • The ability to communicate complex wine information to guests in an engaging and approachable manner;
    • A genuine passion for wine and the hospitality industry;
    • Strong product knowledge and the ability to stay up-to-date on industry trends;
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams and clientele;
    • A customer-focused attitude and strong commitment to delivering exceptional service;
    • The ability to maintain professional working relationships across all departments;
    • Comfort and confidence when interacting with distinguished clients;
    • Strong personal presentation and enthusiasm;
    • Flexibility and accountability in a fast-paced environment.
