Description

Job Advert Summary:

The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) is a research division within the HSRC. It employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies. These focus on human rights, governance, inclusion, food security, safety and the environment.

The Human Science Research Council (HSRC), in partnership with the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the University of York, is pleased to announce the availability of 6 opportunities (4 women and 2 men) for post-graduate researchers to join a project based in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) that examines _The Role of Traditional Food Systems in Rapid Urbanisation_.

This project addresses the challenge of food insecurity in cities as experienced by migrant communities and explores the role of traditional foods in well-being.

The project will focus on two migrant groups in Johannesburg - South African rural-to-urban migrants and international African immigrants.

Identifying the drivers of food choice in urban migrant populations around traditional foods, barriers to consumption and being able to harness this knowledge in urban planning and development.

The study will help tackle the problem of urban food insecurity and malnutrition and make the city a better place to live.

The first phase, a literature review on the availability of traditional fruit and vegetables for different groups of migrants and immigrants and the existing food system within the CoJ, has been completed.

We are now looking for well-qualified and experienced ethnographers/qualitative researchers to undertake the fieldwork in two locations in CoJ. Probably an informal settlement and the central business district.

All post-graduate research assistants will be paid on the completion of specific research tasks/ deliverables.

Besides payment for work done, you will be given a daily allowance for each day in the field and cellular voice time/data.

We anticipate that the fieldwork will be conducted within six weeks during March and April 2023, and you will have transcribed the relevant interviews and completed qualitative surveys as part of your obligation.

You will be expected to work in teams of three at each site. You will probably be expected to work on at least 3 weekend days to visit farmers and markets/hawkers. Transportation will be provided in terms of a rented vehicle for each team.

The fieldwork on the project begins in March 2023. The fieldwork research assistants will be supervised by project leaders in and out of the field.

Toqualify for consideration for this opportunity, you should be interested in food systems, food culture and food security, be based in the City of Johannesburg or nearby and be willing to work in formal and informal settlements with a mix of inhabitants.

As most people in the CoJ speak isiZulu/isiXhosa and Sotho, it is essential that you can converse and communicate clearly in these languages used in the CoJ.

Fluency in English is crucial for report writing/transcribing.
