Position Summary:
The Facilities & Maintenance Technician's role is to repair, prevention and maintenance of all process equipment as well as maintenance to the facilities of MBD Operations and all activities delegated to Facilities.
This position will be under the direction and mentorship of the Facilities & Manufacturing Engineer but will take direction from other managers in the Company on a project basis and support the business.
Responsibilities:
- Be an equipment expert/specialist understanding how all equipment works
- Repair and maintain plant machinery and equipment such as Auto preparators, Fillers, Pressure Vessels, Pumps, Mechanical Seals, Valves, Electric Motors, RO Water System, CIJ(Continues ink jet) printers etc.
- Repair or replace control devices such as switches, pressure gauges, temperature probes, proximity sensors, pushbuttons, valves, electrical relay's, stepper motors, motherboards, etc. as needed.
- Provide reduced downtime and maximum uptime for manufacturing processes through routine and preventive maintenance
- Tackle problems, drive solutions, solving, and preventing future failures
- Document all site repair and improvement activities using any applicable Logs and/or registers.
- Provide feedback and give suggestions to improve equipment stability, efficiency, and performance.
- Maintain good housekeeping and safety practices in the production and maintenance support areas.
- Assist Engineer in carrying out engineering evaluations/experiments/ solving.
- Assist to supervise that work being performed by outside contractors meets EH&S policies, practices and procedures.
For example, but not limited to:
- Security/reception/office services
- Cleaning
- Site waste stream
- Pest control
- Utilities contracts
- Engineering stores
- Generator maintenance and refueling
- Site maintenance and calibration contracts
- Laboratory & Office furniture
- Fire prevention equipment
- Garden services
- Responds to loss of electrical power and water outages
- Establish effective communications and collaborations with personnel at all company levels to ensure that facilities issues are known and stay informed of issues or concerns that impact the quality of work life in Company facilities.
- Participate in all root cause investigations and follow corrective actions and compliance with Company policies and procedures, and all regulatory requirements within department.
- Responsible for involvement in Quality and EHS audit readiness.
- Assist to ensure our facilities are always kept clean and neat.
- Responds to emergencies as appropriate during offhours, holidays, and weekends.
- This position sometimes requires overtime. In some cases, working evenings, weekends, or holidays, may be required to meet project timelines Assist to maintain safe, worker friendly, and environmentally friendly buildings and operational processes.
- Follows and abides by all EH&S policies, practices, and procedures in association with department specific responsibilities.
- Follow all applicable safety laws.
- Responsible for reporting all near misses, accidents, and dangerous occurrences through the appropriate Company procedures to ensure an investigation is initiated.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Other Job Requirements:
- Observes all departmental and Quality System procedures and work instructions.
- Supports Thermo Fisher's dedication for continuous improvement by documenting process improvement opportunities throughout the Quality System.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Process / Mechanical Engineering qualification equal to NQF level 5/
- Digital literacy (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Valid driver's license & own transport
Minimum Experience Level:
- At least 4 years related experience that includes a background in mechanical/electrical maintenance.
Skills and Attributes:
- Ability to use, repair and maintain machines and tools, e.g. welding, soldering etc.
- Requires good mechanical understanding, skills and knowledge, in preventative maintenance.
- Experience with air compressors, refrigeration, HVAC.
- Relevant technical knowledge and a passion for DIY projects
- Experience with painting, carpentry, and smallscale construction.
- Physical skills, e.g. Ability to regularly climb/descend ladders, moving and lifting heavy objects, coordination, dexterity, frequent standing, walking, climbing stairs
- Sophisticated electrical systems knowledge, 3Phase, 220Vac, 24Vdc
- Experience in working closely with contractors and vendors
