Role purpose:


Managing the implementation of the Vodacom (Pty) Ltd privacy programme, including providing guidance and support to the implementation of the privacy program across Vodacom's subsidiaries.

The Privacy Counsel will deal with day-to-day legal, contractual, and regulatory matters involving data privacy and provide strategic advice and guidance including protection and use of personal information across various business units.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Advising on the implementation of privacy baseline requirements into new products and their terms, systems, and services.
  • Leading the implementation and embedment of robust data protection and privacy compliance policies and controls, including Vodacom Group and Vodafone privacy requirements.
  • Providing effective and timely advice relating to internal requests for disclosure and use of data.
  • Manage and support the regulatory and policy engagement with external stakeholders.
  • Assess and set personal data sharing frameworks and requirements, which include mergers and acquisitions relevant to Vodacom.
  • To create position papers with regard to complex privacy issues/risks.
  • Responsible for discharging the privacy responsibilities outlined in the data breach and notification procedures.
  • To build awareness of, and deliver training to, Vodacom business teams on personal information protection and privacy issues, including specialised rolebased training where required.
  • To continuously monitor regulatory/legislative developments and trends/patterns and then draft and update company policies, processes and procedures as required.
  • To track and support the resolution of privacy customer complaints and breaches to appropriate stakeholders.
  • To facilitate alignment between cybersecurity and privacy compliance program, including policies, practices and investigations
  • 810 years in a Legal or Regulatory environment with sound and balanced legal judgement and business awareness, with an understanding of the need to pragmatically assess risk
  • Extensive experience (5yrs or more) in a regulated industry e.g., Telco, banking, management consulting or any other industry that deals with highrisk personal data usage, within a multinational matrix organisation
  • 3 5 years of experience in dealing with privacy and data protection matters is required.
  • Admitted attorney/advocate (an advantage)
  • Relevant Legal Degree essential (LLB preferred)
  • Working knowledge and operationalisation of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and various privacy legislations in Africa
  • A professional Privacy certification (CIPP, CIPT or CIPM) or other privacy certification or qualification is highly recommended

Core competencies, knowledge, and experience:


  • Expert legal, compliance and contract drafting and negotiation skills. Excellent understanding of the Protection of Personal Information Act and global privacy legislation including GDPR, privacy and data protection principles and the riskbased approach in managing privacy risks.
  • Proven experience on operationalising POPIA.
  • Excellent communication skills, presentation, training, public speaking and people skills, with an ability to analyse data protection and processing in the context of IT systems and technologies.
  • Resultsdriven, persevering, proactive, responsible and ethical person with a passion for privacy and the ability to strike a balance between compliance and business interest.
  • Resilient and an ability to deliver in an ambiguous environment; organized and able to engage and manage multiple stakeholders to achieve the objective.
