?Main purpose:
The Lead Publisher for Languages Portfolio leads and manages the Functional Content Development and publishing process/function as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the content creation for a product or service for the Languages portfolio consisting of African languages, English Language and Afrikaans Language.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Management/Leading:
- Lead the Languages team of Publishers and Managing Editors to ensure business strategy and objectives are met (direct line management)
- Develop and mentor Publishers, Managing Editors and content developers/SME's for Languages, to meet their full potential by upskilling/reskilling as required to meet current and future role responsibilities effectively
- Collaborate with leadership to manage capacity of team
- Mitigate and manage potential risks
Contribution to Product Strategy:
- Research and analyse curricula, evaluation criteria, local pedagogy, submission/tender requirements
- Generate product or service pedagogy framework based on policy documents above
- Review and analyse competitor products/services
- Generate product or service concept/vision for all components
Financial Management:
- Prepare product budgets for signoff (Forecast costs)
- Manage product costs within approved budgets
- Sign off and approvals of work as per schedule of authority
Control the flow of work through tracking of work-in-progress:
- Tracking between various internal and external team members.
- Updating schedules during the editorial and production process to ensure clear guidelines during the publishing process.
Content development & Publishing - Manage a list of titles/products:
- Develop detailed specific product/service plan
- Develop detailed instructional design/digital brief and cover briefs
- Develop detailed author/SME commissioning brief
- Recruit appropriate authors/SMEs
- Commission content/service according to detailed product plan
- Provide continuous support during the writing/content development process
- Review quality and conformity and provide feedback until content is approved. This includes critical review of our products vs competitor products
- Backlist maintenance manage reprint corrections; respond to customer queries
Project Management:
- Create project schedule (forecast time)
- Ensure that project is completed by due dates
Production Support:
- Responsible for the overall deadline of products and projects
- Support and guide Managing Editors during production phase by:
- addressing content/author queries
- reviewing first and artwork pages
- signing off and approving master set
Testing/trialing/market research:
- Develop and validate prototype/sections/full product for testing/trialing/research purposes
- Contribute to development of content for marketing material, including creating the product value proposition
Relationship with external stakeholders:
- Develop relationships with Ministry officials and external stakeholders
- Attend relevant workshops, conferences and other events to stay up to date with the Languages curricula
- Work closely with authors/freelancers to create products or services based on relevant pedagogy
Digital:
- Manage the development of digital content
- Concrete understanding of Learning Design best practice and principles for digital learning
Educational Requirements:
Experience Requirements:
- At least five years teaching and/or publishing and/or market related experience in Languages
- Experience in managing inhouse and freelance staff
- Proven record of success in delivering multiple complex projects
Skills and Competencies:
