The MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt) is an exceptional health and population research centre in the Wits School of Public Health.
The Unit supports a major research infrastructure underpinned by a health and socio-demographic surveillance system (HDSS), a form of longitudinal population registration, covering the Agincourt sub-district of rural Mpumalanga Province adjacent to Mozambique that has been in operation since 1992 coupled with observational and intervention studies along the life course.
The Unit seeks to appoint a highly qualified individual to support mental and neurological health and wellbeing research currently underway in the Unit.
The role of this individual involves engaging with senior Unit scientists to actively develop and lead data analysis and production of scientific outputs, including scientific manuscripts and written and oral presentations and reports.
key performance area- Data & Analysis_
- Lead in the generation and curation of tailormade datasets to support the ongoing efforts of senior Unit scientists.
- Support the generation of scientific questions and lead in the analysis to address these questions.
- Scientific Output_
- Lead the production of manuscripts emanating from the analysis conducted.
- Present findings locally, regionally, and internationally at relevant venues, including conferences, _ad hoc_ meetings and symposia.
- Mentorship & Support_
- Support the development of junior colleagues by providing technical and scientific input, mentorship, and guidance.
Required minimum education and training
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities
- At least 2 years of working with a research organization in a documented position requiring data management and analysis.
- Experience working with a scientific/research team.
- At least one peerreviewed, published scientific manuscript in an accredited journal (with evidence of lead authorship).
- Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with high attention to detail.
- Management of large, complex datasets.
- Proficiency with a commonly recognised statistical package (eg Stata, R, SPSS or SAS).
- Team player able to work in a highperforming collaborative environment, and to support scientific investigations across disciplines.
- Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Excellent report writing skills.
- Effective time management skills and ability to work independently and under pressure.
